Grades

A hollow-section grade is a set of requirements a maker has agreed to demonstrate, not a label for strength. Each designation fixes a chemical range, a mechanical property set, an impact condition where it applies, and the tests that evidence them — under a named standard and edition. Start by locating the standard your project cites, then confirm the full designation and the certificates the buyer will accept. Price, stock, origin and delivery timing are confirmed only against the live enquiry.

Choose the route that fits the requirement

Read a grade as a promise about tests, not a description of strength

A grade designation is shorthand for a set of requirements that a steelmaker has agreed to demonstrate — a chemical range, a mechanical property set, an impact condition at a stated temperature, and the tests that prove them. That is why two designations can look similar on a drawing and diverge completely on what the mill has to show you. Start here by locating the standard your project actually cites, then confirm the edition, the full designation including any suffix, and which certificates the buyer will accept, because the suffix and the edition are what decide whether a stack of tubes qualifies.

ASTM A500 Grade B hollow section

A carbon-steel structural tubing grade defined by its own standard and edition. Confirm the governing document and the mechanical basis rather than treating the grade letter as a complete specification.

ASTM A500 Grade C hollow section

A higher strength tier within the same standard family. The tier changes the mechanical requirement, so confirm the project permits it and check the fabrication implications before substituting.

S355J2H hollow section

A designation that couples a strength class with an impact quality and a hollow-section delivery condition. Read each part separately — the suffix is not decoration, and the delivery condition is a separate order field.

ASTM A1085 hollow section

A standard with its own scope and mechanical basis, distinct from other structural tubing specifications. Confirm what the standard itself requires before comparing it with a neighbouring designation.

S235JRH hollow section

A lower strength class in the same designation family. Strength class, impact quality and delivery condition are separate decisions — a lower class is not a drop-in equivalent for a higher one.

STKR400 hollow section

A general-structure designation from a different standards series. Confirm the governing document applies to the project rather than assuming a similar strength figure makes it interchangeable.

STKR490 hollow section

A higher strength tier in the same series, carrying its own scope and tolerance basis. Verify the governing document and the project requirement before treating either tier as a substitute for the other.

Each grade designation carries its own scope, mechanical basis and testing requirement. Selecting one does not make the others interchangeable — confirm the governing document before treating any two as alternatives.

Pairing checker

Check the grade against the document before you specify the member

Most grade errors are a pairing error: a designation is quoted that the named governing document does not actually define. Name the standard and the grade below and the checker reports whether the two belong together — or whether the designation comes from a different standards series. It does not claim any two grades across series are equivalent; a match means only that the document defines that grade. Anything the checker cannot resolve stays listed as an open input rather than being filled in.

Pairing result

Name both a governing document and a grade designation. Until then the pairing cannot be checked, and that is the correct state to hold rather than assuming the pair is valid.

What the checker cannot decide

  • Whether the project permits the grade — approval is a project decision, not a pairing one.
  • The mechanical values — they come from the document's own tables, not from this page.
  • Whether two grades across series are equivalent — similar labels do not prove that.

Route selector

Build a checkable enquiry

Once the pairing holds, the selector narrows the enquiry by buyer task, section form, material route, grade, governing standard, dimensions and destination. It shows only the choices that help resolve the current decision and leaves unsupported fields open. A copyable summary transfers the selected route and unresolved inputs into the RFQ.

What happens next

  1. 1

    Set the task and form

The buyer task narrows the section form before any grade or standard is chosen.

  2. 2

    Fix the governing document

Standard, edition and grade resolve the scope, tolerances, testing and ordering basis.

  3. 3

    Complete the order inputs

Dimensions, quantity, destination and documents complete what can be quoted.

Write the specification

Write the specification so offers can be compared

As a grade hub, this page hands off to the individual grade routes — so write the designation you are working to, the standard and edition behind it, and the thickness and condition that make it meaningful. Add the section and dimensions with units, quantity and unit basis, the inspection and document scope, and the destination. Open the route that matches your designation rather than substituting a lookalike.

Standard and edition

The governing standard and its edition fix scope, grade, tolerances, testing and ordering requirements. Name both so the mechanical and dimensional basis is auditable rather than inferred from a family name.

Grade, class and condition

Give the full grade or class, and record the delivery or heat-treatment condition as a separate field. Condition and toughness testing are distinct decisions and neither follows from the grade label alone.

Dimensions and tolerance basis

State the section family, nominal dimensions with units, length or cut requirement and the tolerance regime that governs acceptance — carried together under one unit system.

Documents & inspection

Match documents and inspection to the order

Request the records the designation generates: material certification read against the standard, edition and grade you cited, dimensional or inspection records where the order requires them, and shipment or origin papers only where they apply. Name each document and its expected issuer. Availability is confirmed for the actual supply, not assumed from this page.

Material certification & traceability

Request the steel certification against the governing standard and grade, with heat or lot traceability to the shipped consignment. The expected issuer is the producing mill or the supplier per the order terms.

Dimensional & inspection records

Where the order requires them, name the dimensional or gauge record and any inspection scope — surface, edge, weld or finish — and state the acceptable basis rather than assuming a default.

Shipment & origin documents

Commercial invoice, packing list, origin and transport documents are requested only where they apply to the consignment, agreed per the Incoterm and the destination rules for the goods actually shipped.

Any certificate, approval or test record is confirmed for the actual supply. Nothing on this page should be read as evidence that a specific document set is held for a specific order.

Operating duty

Where operating duty changes the choice

Follow an application or industry page when the end use changes the section you would choose — a truss node, a handrail fixing or a marine exposure will each pull the specification in a different direction. If the use does not alter the selection, stay on the grade and standard pages instead. The same nominal section can carry very different demands depending on where it ends up — a truss node, a machinery frame and an exposed architectural member each ask something different of the grade and the evidence behind it.

Truss & lattice members

Governing loads, connection detailing and the inspection scope are driven by the structural analysis, not the section name.

Handrails & architectural

Appearance, finish and corrosion exposure often govern. Structural capacity may be secondary to the surface and geometry requirement.

Machinery frames

Dynamic duty, connection stiffness and the fabrication route can impose requirements a general-structure grade does not address.

Infrastructure & structures

Project specifications commonly add toughness, inspection and documentation requirements beyond the base product standard.

Corrosive environments

Material route, coating or galvanizing become separate decisions that change with exposure and service life expectation.

General fabrication

Where duty is not yet classified, state it as open rather than assuming a default grade — the classification changes the requirement.

Coordinate measuring machine probing a metal part to verify its dimensions

A single nominal hollow-section family can carry very different requirements depending on the duty it performs. Confirm the service condition before selecting the form, material route and grade — the application route is a decision input, not a shortcut to a specification.

GCC destination

Plan the GCC destination separately from the steel specification

Keep the designation and its acceptance separate from destination planning. Confirm consignee and importer details, the named port or inland delivery point, the Incoterms rule and named place, the shipment documents, any permit or conformity step required for the actual goods, and the party responsible for each action. No country card implies a local office, warehouse or stock position.

Country cards plan the destination, not the supply position. None of them implies a local office, warehouse or stock position, and none of them changes the steel specification.

Enquiry quality

What a complete enquiry improves

Grade shopping goes wrong in a specific way: a buyer accepts a substitute because the number looks close, and the substitution only surfaces later at inspection, when the impact test or the certificate format does not match what the specification demanded. Naming the standard, edition and full designation up front removes that risk, because a supplier can then decline a grade that does not fit instead of quietly offering one that nearly does. Use the selector to record the grade you intend, then let the enquiry confirm it against the documents you will actually receive.

Comparable offers

When the designation, standard and edition are agreed before quotation, offers line up on the grade requirement itself rather than on how each supplier has worded it.

Missing evidence found early

Naming tests and documents up front surfaces what is unavailable before shipment, rather than after the consignment has left.

Traceable handover

The fabricator or receiving team gets dimensions, condition, tests and documents traceable to the purchase requirement instead of inferred from a product name.

Designation as your drawing prints it

Quote the grade string exactly as it appears on the drawing, together with the standard and edition it belongs to — a close-looking designation is not the same order.

Thickness at which the grade applies

A designation's requirements are frequently tied to the product form and thickness range its standard covers, so the same grade name at a different thickness may not be the same order.

Delivery condition, stated separately

Record as-rolled, normalised, annealed or coated as its own field. The condition describes what is supplied; it is not inferred from the strength class in the grade name.

Impact or toughness class, where one applies

State any impact requirement the service imposes. It is a property of the designation in its condition, and it does not follow automatically from a higher number in the name.

Questions to settle

Questions to settle before ordering

Five questions buyers raise before a hollow-section order is released.

Which designation belongs on the RFQ?

Use the governing document, edition and full grade or class rather than a family nickname. A name such as 'hollow section' does not fix scope, tolerances, testing or ordering requirements — the standard, edition, grade, product form and dimensions together are what a supplier can quote against.

Can a nearby grade or standard be substituted?

Only when the project requirement accepts it, after the properties, dimensions and fabrication implications have been checked. Similar designations on this page are comparison paths only; adjacency is not proof of interchangeability, and no automatic substitution should be assumed between nearby routes.

Which dimensions govern acceptance?

The ordered dimensions and the tolerance regime the governing specification references for that designation. A nominal chart value is not an acceptance tolerance unless the governing document says so — state the dimensions with units, the thickness the designation applies at, the tolerance basis and the length or cut requirement together.

What should be confirmed commercially?

Quantity and unit basis, processing, destination, the Incoterm named place, documents and the required date. Price and availability remain enquiry-specific: they are confirmed against your exact specification and destination rather than stated on this page.

How are documents and inspection agreed?

Request the records the designation actually generates — material certification read against the standard, edition and grade you named, dimensional or inspection records where the order calls for them, and origin or shipment papers only where they apply to the consignment. State the document and its expected issuer, because availability is confirmed for the actual supply rather than assumed here.

Request a quotation
