Grade
The mechanical selector, named exactly.
Steel Tubes · Mechanical Tube Grade
A519 is a seamless mechanical tube specification whose acceptance runs on mechanical properties, not on size alone. The grade is the primary selector; the condition of supply and the heat treatment sit alongside it; and the dimensional requirements come with the route rather than before it.

Order decisions
Because acceptance runs on mechanical results, the enquiry carries the grade, the mechanical requirement and the condition together. Each row below is a decision the specification expects the buyer to make.
| Decision | Why it matters | What to state |
|---|---|---|
| Grade | The grade determines the mechanical properties and the chemistry range the tube is produced and accepted against. It is the primary selector, not a modifier of the size. | Name the A519 grade exactly, with the standard and edition you are ordering to. |
| Mechanical requirements | A519 acceptance is built on mechanical results — tensile, yield, elongation and, where required, hardness or impact. Those values are the acceptance basis rather than a by-product. | State which mechanical requirements apply and confirm they are the ones your design needs. |
| Condition of supply | Whether the tube is hot-finished, cold-drawn, annealed, normalized or otherwise conditioned changes the achievable properties and the dimensional behaviour. | Name the condition. It interacts with the grade, so the two are stated together. |
| Size and wall | The available size and wall range depends on the grade and the manufacturing route. A requirement outside the normal range is a production question rather than a stock one. | State OD, wall and length with the unit system and the ordered wall convention. |
| Heat treatment and testing | Which heat treatment and which tests are applied, and whether supplementary testing is needed, follow from the grade, the condition and the application. | List the heat treatment and the tests, and say whether third-party inspection is in scope. |
| Ends, finish and documents | End preparation, surface and the certificate set are order-specific additions rather than automatic features of the grade. | List them separately, including the mill certificate and any traceability requirement. |
Distinctions
These are the substitutions that produce a tube meeting its certificate and still not meeting the component.
A519 is seamless
The specification covers seamless mechanical tubing. A welded tube is a different manufacturing route with a different set of requirements, and substituting one for the other is a design decision rather than a purchasing one.
The grade is mechanical, not dimensional
Two tubes meeting the same dimensional limits can carry entirely different grade designations and mechanical properties. A size alone does not identify what the tube is made to.
Hot-finished and cold-drawn are not interchangeable
The finishing route changes dimensional control, surface condition, achievable properties and often the machining behaviour. The route belongs on the order next to the grade.
A certificate does not replace the design requirement
A mill certificate evidences what was produced. It does not establish that the grade suits the load, the temperature or the environment the component will see — that is a design decision made before the order.
The applicable grades, mechanical requirements and conditions are those of the edition you order to. Confirm them from the standard itself before specifying — see ASTM A519.
Enquiry
A519 is selected by grade. The condition, heat treatment and testing follow from the grade and the application, so they are stated in the same breath rather than added later.

Comparing routes?
If the application is welded rather than seamless, compare the other mechanical-tube route before settling on a specification.
