Carbon content
The last two AISI digits are the carbon content in hundredths of a percent — 1045 is ~0.45% carbon.
Alloying family
The first two digits identify the alloy group — 10xx for plain carbon, 41xx for chromium-molybdenum.
Grade letter
A letter prefix or suffix (A36, S275, DC01) fixes the governing standard and its requirements.
Carbon content drives weldability and formability as much as strength — a higher-carbon grade is stronger but harder to weld, so the grade must be matched to the fabrication method, not the strength alone.

What is a carbon steel grade?
A carbon steel grade is a designation for steel whose main alloying addition is carbon. It is identified through codes like A36, S275 or AISI 1018 that fix chemical composition and mechanical properties.
What is the difference between low, medium and high carbon steel?
It is the carbon content. Low-carbon is soft and formable, medium-carbon balances strength and ductility, and high-carbon is hard and strong but harder to weld and form.
What does AISI 1018 or 1045 mean?
The first two digits identify the alloying family and the last two the carbon content in hundredths of a percent. 1045 is roughly 0.45% carbon, so it is stronger than 1018.
