Complete the tube component specification
Use the issued grade, geometry and condition requirements.
Scaffold capacity cannot be read from tube diameter, wall or grade alone. Use the approved configuration or design calculation, with actual components and site conditions. The tool below prepares ideal section geometry and records the design information still needed.
Section properties are inputs to engineering review, not a scaffold working load. This guide does not issue an allowable load, design calculation or use approval.
Section geometry
Enter OD and wall in mm for an ideal concentric round section. Record the geometry source and the design inputs still needed. This calculator gives section properties only; tube dimensions cannot establish a scaffold working load.
No review prepared.

Method
For outside diameter D and wall t, both in mm, require D > 0, t > 0 and 2t < D. Internal diameter is D − 2t. Ideal area A = πt(D − t), in mm². Second moment I = πt(D − t)(D² − 2Dt + 2t²)/8, in mm⁴. Radius of gyration r = √(I/A), in mm. Results are approximate numerical geometry with six significant digits.
The ideal model ignores tolerances, ovality, local damage, corrosion and coating. The designer also needs actual material properties, duty and load cases, unsupported lengths and restraints, supports, ties, bracing, coupler resistance/stiffness, foundations and the applicable configuration/design rules. Do not turn a yield-times-area result, a single-tube bending result or section properties into an assembled-scaffold rating.
Worked example
Take an illustrative ideal tube with D = 50 mm and t = 3 mm. Internal diameter is 44 mm; A = 141π ≈ 442.965 mm²; I = 39,092.25π ≈ 122,812 mm⁴; r ≈ 16.6508 mm. These are geometry results, not a stock size, standard tube requirement or allowable load.
If the actual arrangement, connections or condition remain unresolved, the output remains a design-review input. Obtain the approved configuration or calculations and issued component schedule before material release. Even a fully recorded design-basis status here is only a user declaration, not verification of the design.
Acceptance basis
Section properties are inputs to engineering review, not a scaffold working load. This guide does not issue an allowable load, design calculation or use approval.
| Specification decision | Applicability and limit | Evidence to request | RFQ action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section inputs | Ideal geometry does not represent every delivered condition. | Approved dimensions, material evidence and current inspection. | Confirm actual section and limitations. |
| Assembly inputs | Connections, restraints and supports govern the full arrangement. | Applicable configuration or calculation and component evidence. | Resolve all design inputs with the responsible engineer. |
| Release basis | A calculator output is not an approval record. | Issued design/configuration and duty/component schedule. | Keep engineering release distinct from procurement. |
Documentation
Check that the approved basis covers the actual arrangement, components and condition. Do not reuse geometry results as capacity, apply a generic grade multiplier or accept an unidentified tube because its nominal size matches.
| Control | What to examine | When and limits | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section inputs | Approved dimensions, material evidence and current inspection. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | Confirm actual section and limitations. |
| Assembly inputs | Applicable configuration or calculation and component evidence. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | Resolve all design inputs with the responsible engineer. |
| Release basis | Issued design/configuration and duty/component schedule. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | Keep engineering release distinct from procurement. |
| Heat and item identity | Applicable mill records linked to heat/batch markings and packing list. | Before release and again on receipt; a sample certificate is not evidence for the shipped heat. | Request traceability through cutting, bundling and delivery. |
Route selection
| Decision | Why it matters here | Before you enquire |
|---|---|---|
| Only tube size known | Geometry leaves material and assembly behaviour unresolved. | Obtain the complete configuration/design basis. |
| Material grade changed | Strength is only one design input. | Review the whole component change with the designer. |
| Duty or attachments changed | The existing approval may not cover the new arrangement. | Seek a revised design/configuration review. |

Use the destination to close the quotation scope, then confirm feasibility and commercial terms in writing. Country flags identify the destination; quotation must confirm the supply route, origin and availability for this order.
United Arab EmiratesCarry the approved configuration/design revision and component schedule into destination review. Identify the emirate, fabricator or site address and unloading restrictions; distinguish a domestic handover from an import leg.
Saudi ArabiaCarry the approved configuration/design revision and component schedule into destination review. Name the consignee, importer and final site; ask who confirms product classification and border documentation before dispatch.
QatarCarry the approved configuration/design revision and component schedule into destination review. State the nominated receiving point and project document approver; align certificate review with the required arrival window.
OmanCarry the approved configuration/design revision and component schedule into destination review. Specify the actual port, border point or inland site requested; separate the entry leg from onward transport and unloading.
KuwaitCarry the approved configuration/design revision and component schedule into destination review. Identify the contractor or fabrication yard receiving the scaffolding tubes; agree import-document responsibility and the named delivery place.
BahrainCarry the approved configuration/design revision and component schedule into destination review. Confirm whether the order is for local consumption or onward shipment; name the consignee and agree who handles each transport leg.
Expert insight
HSE requires strength/stability calculations unless the arrangement has an applicable calculation record or recognised standard configuration.
Buyer implication: Obtain that actual basis before using a component schedule.
Method: Review of the primary publisher’s public scope or guidance; procurement implications are editorial analysis. Applicability: UK design-basis guidance used as a technical principle; local/project requirements govern. Limit: No universal capacity, erection dimensions or design approval is provided.

Responsibilities
| Stage and owner | Required input | Evidence or output | Risk and next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering release — Buyer’s design authority | Designer reviews the actual arrangement and component inputs. | Approved specification and drawing revision | Unapproved substitution can change the design basis. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Offer review — Buyer and quotation team | Buyer obtains the issued component schedule and resolves exceptions. | Written technical exceptions and commercial scope | An unlisted exception can survive into the purchase order. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Material release — Mill, inspector and buyer as agreed | Reviewer checks material records and current condition. | Accepted documents linked to the order items | Missing heat identity can make an otherwise correct scaffolding tube unacceptable. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Receipt and reconciliation — Receiving team | Site retains the approved duty basis and completes separate use handover. | Delivery record, item count and discrepancy record | Record any mismatch before the material is incorporated into work. Close the item before proceeding. |
