Order an explicit A513 Type 5 requirement
Resolve the type, grade and thermal-condition fields before comparing quotes.
DOM Steel Tube
Specify DOM tube when the component drawing needs controlled round-tube dimensions and a defined internal surface. Send the steel grade, finished OD and ID or wall basis, thermal condition and machining allowance together; a DOM description alone is not an acceptance specification.
DOM describes the drawing route, not a seamless product or a chemical grade. ASTM A513 Type 5 is a specific DOM route; ASTM A519 seamless mechanical tube remains a separate purchasing option.
Selection logic
DOM is a manufacturing route, not a strength class and not a grade. Work through the three states below before the route is written into an order.
| Decision | Why it matters here | Before you enquire |
|---|---|---|
| Fits a controlled mechanical component | A defined bore or outside surface can reduce uncertainty in the machining plan. | Name the controlling dimensions and the material condition. |
| Verify before cylinder use | A drawn bore is not automatically a finished sealing surface. | Specify final honing, bore geometry and the seal supplier’s surface criteria. |
| Choose another route when seamless is mandatory | Drawing a welded tube does not remove its manufacturing origin. | Ask the design authority whether A519 seamless tube is required. |

Resolve the type, grade and thermal-condition fields before comparing quotes.
Use this alternative only when a seamless route and the specified material condition meet the drawing.
Specification builder
Capture the decisions below, prepare a review summary and copy it to the tube RFQ. Review the ordered dimensional basis, welded-route permission and thermal condition against the finished component drawing. No pressure or fatigue qualification follows from DOM alone.
Acceptance basis
Each row names the decision, what limits it, the evidence that verifies it and the action it becomes on the enquiry. No tolerance value, chemistry or property requirement is published here — every figure comes from the governing document or your drawing.
| Specification decision | Applicability and limit | Evidence to request | RFQ action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade and Type 5 | A513 type and steel chemistry are separate order fields. | Heat-linked certificate with grade, standard edition and type. | State both grade and Type 5; do not enter Type 5 as chemistry. |
| OD, ID and wall control | Simultaneous tolerances may conflict; nominal arithmetic does not guarantee measured bore. | Agreed dimensional schedule and inspection method. | Identify controlling pair and any supplementary limit. |
| Thermal condition and machining | Cold work and subsequent treatment affect processing behaviour. | Mill delivery condition and agreed property requirements. | State condition before a machining or forming trial. |
| Finished surface | DOM does not certify a seal-ready bore. | Surface parameter, measurement method and finishing scope. | Separate drawing from honing or polishing. |
Route warning. Draw-over-mandrel processing changes the dimensions of a welded tube; it does not change its manufacturing origin. Where a drawing, standard or service condition requires a seamless product, the DOM route does not satisfy it — and where simultaneous OD, ID and wall limits are all specified, the mill must confirm they can be met together.
Quality & documentation
Compare the offered certificate and dimensional report with the component revision. A commercial description cannot replace the heat identity, condition or bore measurement agreed on the purchase order.
| Control | What to examine | When and limits | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade and Type 5 | Heat-linked certificate with grade, standard edition and type. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | State both grade and Type 5; do not enter Type 5 as chemistry. |
| OD, ID and wall control | Agreed dimensional schedule and inspection method. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | Identify controlling pair and any supplementary limit. |
| Thermal condition and machining | Mill delivery condition and agreed property requirements. | Before material acceptance; confirm feasibility and cost at quotation. | State condition before a machining or forming trial. |
| Heat and item identity | Mill test certificate linked to heat markings and packing list. | Before release and again on receipt; a sample certificate is not evidence for the shipped heat. | Request traceability through cutting, bundling and delivery. |

A drawn bore is a dimensional starting point. Acceptance of a bore for a sealing or bearing duty needs a stated measurement method and an agreed parameter — the word DOM supplies neither.
Where OD, ID and wall are all given as nominal with separate tolerances, the permitted combinations can conflict. Name the pair that governs acceptance and treat the rest as reference.
A mill certificate describes a heat. Ask how identity is carried through cutting, bundling and despatch so the certificate still describes the pieces that arrive.
Applications
The drawing and service envelope govern acceptance. These paths address different purchasing decisions; an application label does not approve a material.
For sleeves and spacers, compare machining allowance with the dimensional report before scheduling production.
A barrel enquiry also needs bore geometry, final surface and pressure-design review.
Customer drawing approval and validation remain necessary for safety-relevant parts.

GCC markets
Use the destination to close the quotation scope, then confirm feasibility and commercial terms in writing. Country flags identify the destination; quotation must confirm the supply route, origin and availability for this order.
United Arab EmiratesKeep DOM type, condition and bore protection visible on the destination packing schedule. Identify the emirate, fabricator or site address and unloading restrictions; distinguish a domestic handover from an import leg.
Saudi ArabiaKeep DOM type, condition and bore protection visible on the destination packing schedule. Name the consignee, importer and final site; ask who confirms product classification and border documentation before dispatch.
QatarKeep DOM type, condition and bore protection visible on the destination packing schedule. State the nominated receiving point and project document approver; align certificate review with the required arrival window.
OmanKeep DOM type, condition and bore protection visible on the destination packing schedule. Specify the actual port, border point or inland site requested; separate the entry leg from onward transport and unloading.
KuwaitKeep DOM type, condition and bore protection visible on the destination packing schedule. Identify the contractor or fabrication yard receiving the tubes; agree import-document responsibility and the named delivery place.
BahrainKeep DOM type, condition and bore protection visible on the destination packing schedule. Confirm whether the order is for local consumption or onward shipment; name the consignee and agree who handles each transport leg.
Commercial comparison
Finished lengths, machining allowance and bore protection are part of the scope you are comparing — a per-tonne figure that omits them is not the same offer.
Compare finished lengths, machining allowance and bore-protection scope before comparing a per-tonne price. Ask whether cutting or final bore finishing is included and how heat identity survives split bundles.
Ask for the offered mill and origin, tube schedule, quantity basis, processing scope, packing, commercial validity and exclusions. State the Incoterm with its named place and edition, who unloads, and the requested delivery window. Price, availability, production allocation, transport feasibility and dates require written confirmation.
Pricing. DOM tube is quoted against the ordered scope — dimensions, condition, finishing and documents. Price on request.
Availability, allocation, transport feasibility and dates are confirmed in writing on quotation.
Adjacent decisions
Close dimensional and surface uncertainties before allowing an apparently equivalent DOM offer.
Resolve which dimensions are guaranteed and how each is measured.
Name the measured parameter and acceptance method instead of ordering a “smooth bore”.
Expert insight
ASTM identifies Type 5 within its welded mechanical-tube specification. A seamless-only drawing therefore needs a different route decision.
Buyer implication: Keep manufacturing route and grade as separate RFQ fields.

Review support
Three decisions recur on nearly every DOM tube enquiry. Each one is closed with a document, not an assurance.
Heat-linked certificate with grade, standard edition and type.
State both grade and Type 5; do not enter Type 5 as chemistry.
Agreed dimensional schedule and inspection method.
Identify controlling pair and any supplementary limit.
Mill delivery condition and agreed property requirements.
State condition before a machining or forming trial.
Responsibilities
DOM tube acceptance is a chain of documented decisions. Each stage below names who owns it, what they must supply and what happens if it is left open.
| Stage and owner | Required input | Evidence or output | Risk and next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering release — Buyer’s design authority | Release the finished-part drawing and controlling bore dimensions. | Approved specification and drawing revision | Unapproved substitution can change the design basis. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Offer review — Buyer and quotation team | Compare offered grade, type, condition and machining scope line by line. | Written technical exceptions and commercial scope | An unlisted exception can survive into the purchase order. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Material release — Mill, inspector and buyer as agreed | Accept heat identity and the agreed bore/OD measurement report. | Accepted documents linked to the order items | Missing heat identity can make an otherwise correct tube unacceptable. Close the item before proceeding. |
| Receipt and reconciliation — Receiving team | Check protected bore ends, lengths and bundle identification before machining. | Delivery record, item count and discrepancy record | Record any mismatch before the material is incorporated into work. Close the item before proceeding. |
Procurement FAQs
Six route-specific questions from the buyer’s side of the desk — not definitions, which are already resolved above.
A519 is the seamless specification. If DOM is intended, ask the design authority to approve the appropriate welded specification, grade and condition rather than relabelling A519.
Only an agreed final bore geometry and surface acceptance can establish that. Identify whether honing or another finishing step is included.
Use the component drawing to choose the controlling OD, ID and wall basis. Have the mill review simultaneous limits before purchase.
No. Request the grade, delivery condition and applicable property requirements; suitability for the part requires engineering review.
Ask for a cutting and identification plan linked to the heat and packing list. Agree how individual pieces or bundles remain identifiable.
Include drawing revision, grade, standard edition, type, dimensions, condition, finish, quantity basis, documents and delivery point.
Enquiry handoff
Review the ordered dimensional basis, welded-route permission and thermal condition against the finished component drawing. No pressure or fatigue qualification follows from DOM alone. Include the completed fields and the controlling drawing revision so exceptions can be returned against the right requirement.
Prepare and copy the summary above, then open the steel-tubes RFQ and paste it into the requirement field. Add your name, company and reply email on that form. Supporting drawings can be shared through the destination’s verified contact process.
This page prepares your enquiry locally. Opening the RFQ does not submit it. A submission is complete only when the receiving form returns a genuine acknowledgement.
