Seamless Steel Pipe

Seamless Steel Pipe Supplier

A seamless pipe has no longitudinal weld seam. That distinction alone does not prove suitability; the governing standard, grade, dimensions, tolerances, testing, service conditions, and documentation still control selection.

Product Definition

How seamless pipe is specified and sourced

Whether a seamless route is correct for your service is a specification decision, not a brand preference. We quote against a locked set — governing standard, grade, NPS and schedule, testing scope and document set — rather than treating 'seamless' as sufficient.

Seamless is the right route where the pipeline spec demands a uniform wall and no longitudinal seam — typically pressure service, elevated or low temperature, and grades governed by A106, A333, A312 or API 5L. For many line and structural services a welded route meets the same standard at lower cost, which is why the route is confirmed against the governing standard before we quote.

On a seamless enquiry the controlling variables are the standard and edition, the grade, the NPS / schedule (wall), the required testing, and the document set (MTC, dimensional report, test results). Your line schedule and material class are typically enough for us to reconcile these and return a confirmed offer with delivery terms — no clarification round-trip on the basics.

Manufacturing Route

What the seamless route controls in your spec

The route sets the dimensional tolerance, mechanical properties and inspection scope your MTC has to evidence. These stages are how a seamless order stays within the standard and grade you quoted against.

01

Rotary piercing

A solid round billet is heated above transformation temperature and pierced by a rotating plug mill to open the bore.

02

Wall reduction

The pierced hollow is elongated over a mandrel to set the outside diameter and wall thickness within tolerance.

03

Heat treatment

Depending on grade and standard, the pipe is normalised or quenched-and-tempered to achieve the stated mechanical properties.

04

Inspection & test

Dimensional checks and — where the standard requires — hydrostatic, eddy-current or UT testing with an MTC to record results.

Available Materials

Material classes we coordinate for seamless pipe

Seamless pipe is sourced across carbon, line-pipe, low-temperature and stainless steels. Material is selected with the governing standard and grade — never in isolation.

Carbon steel

Covers A106 and A53 seamless for high-temperature and pressure service.

Line pipe steel

API 5L grades for oil, gas and product transmission.

Low-temperature steel

A333 Gr.6 for service below 0 °C.

Stainless steel

A312 TP304 / TP316 for corrosion and hygiene service.

Grades & Standards

Seamless grades under their governing standards

A grade is only meaningful under its standard. Confirm the standard, grade and applicable edition together before an enquiry.

StandardGradesTypical service
ASTM A106Gr. B / Gr. CSeamless carbon pipe for high-temperature service
ASTM A53Gr. A / Gr. BSeamless and welded pipe for mechanical and pressure use
API 5LGr. B / X42 / X52 / X60Line pipe for oil, gas and product transmission
ASTM A333Gr. 6Low-temperature seamless pipe
ASTM A312TP304 / TP316Seamless stainless pipe for corrosive service

Confirm the current applicable edition of the standard before publication or enquiry. Availability is agreed at quotation.

Sizes & Schedules

Common seamless pipe sizes and wall schedules

Seamless pipe is specified by nominal pipe size (NPS) and schedule — the schedule sets the wall and therefore the pressure rating. Confirm the exact OD, wall and length that apply to your order.

Nominal sizes and outside diameters

NPSOutside diameterScheduleTypical use
1/2"21.3 mmSch 40 / 80Instrumentation and utility lines
2"60.3 mmSch 40 / 80Process and distribution piping
4"114.3 mmSch 40 / 80Transfer lines and manifolds
10"273.1 mmSch 20 / 40 / STDMain process and transmission lines
20"508.0 mmSch 20 / 40Long-run transmission and trunk lines

Sizes and schedules offered are confirmed against your specification. Add the length, tolerance and quantity to your enquiry.

Applications

Where a seamless route is specified

Seamless pipe is chosen where pressure integrity, uniform wall or elevated-temperature strength governs the service. Confirm the application, fluid, temperature and code before selection.

Inspection & Documents

The documents that evidence a seamless pipe lot

Traceable testing and documentation are agreed before quotation — the MTC, dimensional report and test results accompany the lot to support project documentation.

Properties

What the seamless route delivers

The engineering value of a seamless pipe shows up in wall consistency, pressure integrity and temperature strength — all of which depend on the specified grade and standard.

Uniform wall

No weld seam, so the wall is consistent around the circumference and through length.

Pressure integrity

Resists internal pressure well — the preferred route for high-pressure process and line service.

Elevated-temperature strength

Holds a defined stress capacity at temperature when specified to A106.

Environment fit

Carbon or stainless selection matched to the fluid, temperature and environment.

Traceable testing

Heat and test records carried on the MTC to support project documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Seamless steel pipe, answered for buyers

Direct answers to the questions procurement teams ask most when evaluating seamless pipe.

What is the main difference between seamless and welded steel pipe?

Seamless pipe is pierced from a solid billet and has no longitudinal weld seam, giving a uniform wall around the circumference — the preferred route for pressure, elevated-temperature and high-integrity service. Welded pipe (ERW and LSAW) is formed from strip or plate and welded, and is often more economical for line and structural duty. Which route is right depends on the governing standard, grade, schedule, service pressure and application, not on the manufacturing route alone.

Is seamless pipe always a better choice than welded pipe?

No. Seamless advantages — a uniform wall and no weld seam — matter where pressure and temperature integrity dominate. For many line and structural services a welded route meets the specification at a lower cost. Suitability is decided against the governing standard, grade, dimensions, tolerances and test requirements, not by choosing seamless by default.

Can you supply seamless steel pipe in stainless steel?

Yes — seamless stainless steel pipe to ASTM A312 in TP304 and TP316 grades is part of the range we coordinate. Availability is confirmed against your specification: grade, OD, wall or schedule, length, quantity, destination and required documents are agreed before quotation.

Which seamless steel pipe standard should I use?

ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon pipe for high-temperature service, ASTM A333 Gr.6 covers low-temperature seamless pipe, API 5L covers line pipe for oil, gas and product transmission, and ASTM A312 covers seamless stainless pipe. The governing standard, grade and edition are selected together against your service conditions — a grade is only meaningful under its standard.

How do I specify a seamless steel pipe in my enquiry?

State the governing standard and grade, outside diameter (NPS) and schedule or wall thickness, length, quantity, required documents (such as a Mill Test Certificate), application and service conditions, and destination. The Seamless Route Fit and RFQ Builder below collects these fields into a copyable RFQ summary you can send to our commercial department.
