Technical Guide

Select grade, standard and size together

A standard defines manufacturing and testing rules; a grade defines chemistry and mechanical minimums; the size defines geometry. No value here is invented — each is confirmed against the governing standard, MTC or project specification.

Technical Insight

Thickness drives more than weight

A single verified calculation shows why plate is specified by thickness first — the dimension that governs unit weight, tolerance and weld design together.

Thickness (mm)Unit weightTypical toleranceNotes
6≈ 47.1 kg/m²± 0.75 mmThin structural plate
10≈ 78.5 kg/m²± 0.80 mmGeneral fabrication
20≈ 157 kg/m²± 0.90 mmVessel and tank shell
40≈ 314 kg/m²± 1.20 mmHeavy engineering
60≈ 471 kg/m²± 1.50 mmPressure-retaining plate

Unit weight = thickness × 7.85 kg/m²/mm (nominal density of steel). Tolerance figures are indicative of common mill limits — the exact value follows the governing standard and is confirmed against the MTC, never assumed.

Why it matters

A 2 mm error on a tank course becomes tonnes across a shell

Because unit weight scales linearly with thickness, a small dimensional decision compounds across a full plate order. Specifying thickness, tolerance and standard together — rather than "plate, about 20 mm" — is what keeps the weight, weld design and delivered material consistent from quotation to site.

Applications & Industries

Plate matched to how it will be used

Each application raises a different primary concern — pressure retention, wear, weldability or documentation. The grid ties each concern to the question to resolve before sending an RFQ.

Pressure Vessels

Primary concern: Grade, impact test and NDT requirements under code.

Resolve before RFQ: Which vessel code and design temperature apply?

Boilers

Primary concern: Elevated-temperature tensile and code certification.

Resolve before RFQ: What design pressure and temperature govern the plate?

Fabrication

Primary concern: Weldability, flatness and edge preparation.

Resolve before RFQ: What cut, edge-prep and weld procedure does the shop use?

Storage Tanks

Primary concern: Large-format plate with weld-window consistency.

Resolve before RFQ: Which tank code and shell course thickness are specified?

Mining & Wear

Primary concern: Abrasion-resistant and high-hardness grades.

Resolve before RFQ: What hardness range must the wear plate meet?

Oil, Gas & Petrochemical

Primary concern: Sour-service, heat-treatment and documentation.

Resolve before RFQ: Which NACE or project spec applies to the plate?

Marine & Shipbuilding

Primary concern: Classification-society approved plate.

Resolve before RFQ: Which class society and hull certification apply?

"The quotation was easier to review because the plate type, grade, thickness, width, unit weight, documentation and delivery requirements were consolidated before pricing. That reduced clarification rounds between engineering and procurement."

FAQ

Steel plate sourcing, answered directly

What steel plate types can Noor Deira Steel supply?

Carbon, stainless, boiler and pressure vessel, alloy, shipbuilding and cut-to-size plate. Availability is confirmed against the specification, not from a standing catalogue.

How do I choose the right plate grade?

Match the grade to service: A36 for general structure, A516 for pressure vessels, A572 for higher strength and AR grades for wear. Confirm the governing standard and grade together so the order is unambiguous.

What is the difference between a plate grade and a standard?

The standard (for example ASTM A516 or EN 10028-2) defines manufacturing and testing rules; the grade (A516 Grade 70, P355GH) defines chemistry and mechanical minimums. Specify both.

Can plate be supplied with a Mill Test Certificate?

Yes — a Mill Test Certificate is issued per consignment, reporting chemical composition and mechanical properties traceable to the heat and mill of origin. Supplementary testing is quoted on request.

What information do I need to request a plate quotation?

Plate type, material and grade, standard, thickness, width, length, quantity, required documents, application, destination and Incoterm. The Specification Builder collects these fields and hands them to our commercial department.

Does Noor Deira Steel deliver steel plate across the GCC?

Yes — Noor Deira Steel coordinates plate supply to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, with Incoterms, packaging and destination documents agreed per order. Lead time is confirmed at quotation stage.

Are pressure vessel and boiler plates available certified?

Yes — A516, EN 10028 and equivalent vessel grades can be supplied with code-supporting documentation, including impact test results where the governing code requires them. Requirements are confirmed at specification review.
