Steel Tube Grades

Steel Tube Grades

A grade designation is a composition requirement. It is the field buyers quote first and the one that settles least on its own — the standard edition, the manufacturing route, the dimensions, the delivered condition and the inspection scope are all separate decisions that have to be agreed before an offer can be compared.

This page maps the grade field and the pages built around it. It does not publish composition values, mechanical properties, corrosion rates or temperature limits — those come from the governing standard edition and the project specification.

What a grade fixes

Six fields, only one of which is the grade

A complete tube callout combines these fields. Quoting a grade on its own leaves the rest to be resolved at quotation — or discovered at the bench.

The specification fields in a steel tube order, what each one fixes and what to state before enquiring
Specification fieldWhat it fixesBefore you enquire
Product standard and editionThe document the order invokes. Two standards can list the same grade name while specifying different requirements.Name the standard and the edition the contract uses.
Grade designationA composition requirement. It is the field buyers quote most often and the one that settles least on its own.State the exact designation as written on the approved specification.
Manufacturing routeSeamless and welded tube can both meet a grade requirement while differing in route, cost and inspection.State the permitted route, or that both are acceptable.
Dimensions and tolerancesOD, wall and length each carry their own tolerance basis, and the governing dimension changes by application.Give the controlling dimensions in one unit system with the tolerance basis.
Delivery condition and surfaceHeat treatment, finish and coating requirements are separate from the grade itself.Define the as-delivered condition, and state a measurable limit where appearance is not enough.
Inspection and documentationThe certificates, tests and traceability the order requires are agreed, not implied by the grade name.List the required documents and the acceptance basis behind them.

The grade is a requirement, not a ranking

A higher-alloyed or more familiar designation is not automatically an approved one. Approval comes from the specification that governs the item.

Route and grade are independent

The permitted seamless or welded route is agreed alongside the grade, and the two can carry different test and condition requirements.

Evidence has to name the item

Certificates, heat identity and inspection records must refer to the material actually supplied, not to a representative sample.

Grade pages

Steel tube grades by family and duty

Each page covers one designation: what it is used for, what the order has to state beside it, and the decisions that remain open. Read them on your own project requirement rather than as a ranking.

Stainless

ASTM A269 TP304 Tube

The austenitic stainless tube grade most widely used for instrumentation and process lines, where the approved specification names it.

Open grade page

Stainless

ASTM A269 TP316L Tube

A separate A269 grade with its own composition requirement. A change between the two grades is a substitution, not a like-for-like swap.

Open grade page

Alloy

ASTM A213 T22 Tube

A higher-alloy A213 grade used where the service duty calls for it. The grade change follows the equipment design, not the quotation.

Open grade page

This list covers the steel tube grade pages published for the range. A designation that is not listed can still be quoted against your specification — send the exact grade, standard edition and duty, and availability is confirmed in writing.

Route and standard

The standard edition does as much work as the grade

Two documents can list the same grade name while asking for different things. The contract has to invoke one of them, by edition, or the offers are not comparable.

How grade designations vary in form and what to confirm before ordering against one
Form of designationWhat it meansWhat to confirm
Nominal designationA named grade with a composition requirement, such as one of the A269 TP designations.Confirm the designation is current in the edition the order invokes.
Suffix and prefix qualifiersA qualifier changes a requirement rather than decorating the name.Read the designation character by character against the approved specification.
Cross-standard equivalentsSimilar-looking designations in different systems are not automatically interchangeable.Get the substitution released by the design authority before ordering against it.

Grade and route go together

The standard family a grade belongs to already narrows the duty it is written for. Read the family before the grade.

  • Fluid and pressure duty

Fluid service tubing where the controlling standard is written around the fluid, temperature and pressure envelope.

    A269 and A213 grade pages

  • Mechanical and machined duty

Components where dimensions, concentricity, machinability and surface condition carry the acceptance.

    A513 and A519 grade pages

  • Structural duty

Members where the section, the structural standard and the weldability basis govern.

    Hollow section grade pages

  • Special service

Corrosive, sour, hygienic or cryogenic duties needing their own material selection and fabrication assessment.

Obtain the project material selection, then name the grades it approves

Start from the standard, not the grade

The A269 stainless tube page sets out the fluid-service specification those grades sit inside — scope, permitted routes, order fields and the limits of what the standard itself establishes.

ASTM A269 Stainless Tube

For the grade designations inside that family, the A269 page and the TP304 and TP316L grade pages are read together: the family page carries the route and order fields, and the grade page carries the service and connection decisions specific to that designation.

Next decisions

Close the fields beside the grade

Grade identity is settled first in conversation and last on the order. These are the pages that carry the rest of the callout.

  • Standard and edition. Name the document the contract invokes, including the edition, so offers are compared on one basis.
  • Manufacturing route. State the permitted seamless or welded route, and any test or condition difference attached to it.
  • Dimensions and tolerances. Give OD, wall and length in one unit system with the controlling dimension identified.
  • Delivered condition. Define heat treatment, finish, coating and cleaning as delivered, not as installed.
  • Inspection and documents. List the certificates, tests and traceability the order requires, and how they link to the shipped items.

ASTM steel grades

The grade system itself, across every product form, is set out on the ASTM steel grades page — useful when one grade has to stay consistent across plate, pipe and tube on the same package.

Coordinate ASTM grade requirements

Tube dimensions, tolerances and surface condition each have their own guide, and they carry the notation an offer has to match.
