Carbon Steel Tube

Carbon Steel Tube

Carbon steel is the base material, not the specification. The family — structural, mechanical, pressure or precision — sets the standard, and the standard sets the grade, the route and the dimensional basis you can order against.

Families

Four carbon tube families and what each one governs

The material is carbon steel in all four. What differs is the specification the tube is bought against, and that is what the mill quotes to.

Carbon steel tube families: what each family governs and what to state before enquiring
FamilyWhat it governsBefore you enquire
Structural tubeLoad-carrying duties where the structural specification and weldability govern.State the structural standard, grade and weldability requirement.
Mechanical tubeMachined components where dimensional control and surface condition govern.State the mechanical-tube standard, controlling dimension and machining allowance.
Pressure and fluid tubeFluid-conveying duties under a pressure or heat-transfer specification.Name the governing pressure or heat-transfer standard and the design basis.
Precision and hollow-section tubeClose-tolerance and non-circular sections for fabricated assemblies.State the precision standard, the section and the fabrication method.

No grade chemistry, tolerance value or mechanical property is published on this page. Those figures come from the standard edition the contract invokes or from your drawing.

Order fields

Six fields that make a carbon tube order complete

An enquiry that names only “carbon steel tube” leaves the family, grade and route unresolved.

1

Product standard and edition

The document edition the contract invokes — not the family name.

2

Grade

The steel grade as written on the drawing, stated as chemistry.

3

Manufacturing route

Seamless, welded or drawn as the standard and drawing permit.

4

Dimensions and tolerances

OD, wall and length, with the controlling dimension named against its tolerance basis.

5

Surface condition

The as-delivered surface requirement, whether bare, oiled or otherwise protected.

6

Documentation

The certificate and inspection set required, referenced to the drawing revision.

Protection decisions

Decide protection at the tube order, not afterwards

Carbon steel will corrode unprotected. Whether that is handled by a coating applied later, by the tube supplier, or by the environment being controlled is a decision that belongs on the enquiry.

  • State the exposure the tube will see before any coating is applied.
  • State who applies the protection and at which stage of fabrication.
  • Confirm whether the ordered dimensions are before or after coating.
  • Confirm the surface condition the coating process requires.
  • Agree the protection for cut ends, drilled holes and weld-affected zones.
  • Agree the storage and packing plan for the period between delivery and use.

Galvanized steel tube

Where the protection decision is a zinc coating, the Galvanized Steel Tube page separates substrate and coating requirements and covers post-coating fit.
