Steel Tube Standards

Steel Tube Standards

The product standard is the document the order invokes. It sets the scope, the permitted manufacturing routes and the fields the order is expected to carry — but it is not the grade, not the manufacturing route and not an approval for a service the drawing has not released. Reading it as any of those is what produces a tube that conforms and still does not suit the job.

No chemistry values, mechanical properties, corrosion rates, temperature limits, tolerance figures or pressure ratings are published on this page. Every figure used in a live enquiry comes from the ordered edition of the governing standard.

What a standard fixes

Six fields the order carries beside the document

A complete tube callout names the standard and then states each of these separately. Quoting the document alone leaves the rest to be resolved at quotation — or discovered at the bench.

The fields a steel tube standard expects the order to carry, what each one fixes and what to state before enquiring
Order fieldWhat it fixesBefore you enquire
Scope and permitted routesA product standard states what it covers. A mechanical tubing specification and a fluid-service specification can share a form without covering the same duties.Confirm the standard actually covers the duty before quoting against it.
Manufacturing type or routeSeamless, as-welded, sink-drawn, drawn-over-mandrel and other routes are often branches inside one document.Name the permitted route, or that both are acceptable, rather than assuming one.
Grade designationThe material grade sits alongside the product standard, not inside its title.State the grade exactly as the approved specification writes it.
Dimensions and tolerancesThe applicable allowances follow from the type, shape and size that were selected.Give OD, wall and length in one unit system with the controlling dimension named.
Condition of supplyAs-welded, annealed, normalised and other conditions are order decisions the document expects to be stated.Name the delivered condition separately from the type.
Inspection and documentationWhich tests apply, which are supplementary, and what evidence is issued are all part of the order scope.List the required tests, certificates and the acceptance basis behind them.

The document is not the grade

A product standard's title identifies scope. The material grade is stated alongside it and is not implied by the document number.

Route is usually a branch inside

One document can cover seamless and several welded routes, each carrying its own test and condition expectations.

Tolerances follow the selection

The applicable allowances follow from the type, shape and size chosen, so they cannot be quoted before those are fixed.

Standard pages

Steel tube standards by duty

Each page covers one specification: what it governs, which decisions it pushes onto the order, and the limits of what it establishes. Read them against your own drawing rather than as a ranking.

Mechanical · Welded

ASTM A513 Steel Tube

The welded mechanical-tube family, ordered by type, grade, thermal condition and shape. Type 5 DOM is one branch, not the whole family.

This list covers the steel tube standard pages published for the range. A specification that is not listed can still be quoted against your drawing — send the document with its edition, and availability is confirmed in writing.

Edition and scope

The edition does as much work as the document number

Two offers can both claim the same standard while working to different editions of it, or reading its scope differently. Neither gap is visible on the quotation.

How a steel tube standard's edition and scope affect the order, and what to confirm before comparing offers
Point to settleWhy it mattersBefore you enquire
The edition is part of the orderA standard is revised. Two offers can both say they meet the same document while working to different editions of it.Name the edition the contract invokes, not the document alone.
Product standard against product specificationSome documents set requirements directly; others describe a family and push detail onto the order.Read what the document actually fixes before treating it as a complete callout.
Cross-standard substitutionSimilar-scope documents in different systems are not automatically interchangeable.Get the substitution released by the design authority before ordering against it.
What the document does not approveA product standard is not an assembly pressure rating, a structural approval or a certification for every service.Keep the service approval separate from the conformity decision.

Where the grade pages sit

A standard page covers the document. The grade designations inside it have their own pages, because a grade is a separate decision with its own service and connection consequences.

Steel tube grades

Start from the duty, then the document

The duty decides which family of specifications applies: fluid service, mechanical, pressure or precision. Reading the standard before the duty is how a conforming tube ends up on the wrong line.

Close the fields beside the document

The standard is settled first in conversation and last on the order. These are the pages that carry the rest of the callout.

  • Name the edition. State the document with the edition the contract invokes, so offers are compared on one basis.
  • State the route. Give the permitted manufacturing route, or confirm both are acceptable.
  • State the grade separately. The grade is not implied by the document number and has to be written out.
  • Fix dimensions and condition. Record OD, wall, length and the delivered condition, with the tolerance source.
  • List the inspection scope. Name the tests, certificates and traceability the order requires, and how they link to the shipped items.

ASTM steel grades

Where the grade has to stay consistent across tube, pipe and plate on the same package, the ASTM grades page is the coordinating route.

Coordinate ASTM grade requirements

Tube dimensions, tolerances and surface condition each have their own guide, and they carry the notation an offer has to match.
