Standard prefix
5L, 5CT or 1104 identify the governing API standard — line pipe, casing and tubing, or welding.
Grade coder
A letter-digit coder (A, B, X42, X70, J55, N80) fixes composition and minimum strength.
PSL level
Product specification level — PSL 1 or PSL 2 — sets the testing and quality requirements.
The PSL level matters as much as the grade — PSL 2 line pipe carries tighter chemistry, impact and inspection requirements than PSL 1, so both must be named to hold an order.

What is an API steel grade?
An API steel grade is a material designation governed by a standard published by the American Petroleum Institute, such as API 5L for line pipe or API 5CT for casing and tubing.
What does X42 or X70 mean?
The number is the minimum yield strength in thousands of psi. X70 means a minimum yield of 70,000 psi, so it is stronger than X42 or X60.
What is the difference between API 5L and API 5CT?
API 5L covers line pipe for transporting oil and gas, while API 5CT covers casing and tubing that line the wellbore itself. They serve different parts of the same oilfield system.
