One standard. One grade. One product.

An EN grade is not a table of numbers. It is a designation inside one product-specific standard, and each part — designation, material number, delivery condition — fixes a different corner of the requirement.

EN standard

A numbered European standard (e.g. EN 10025) that sets out product form, tolerances and test methods.

Steel grade designation

The symbolic name that fixes a minimum yield or guaranteed properties, e.g. S355.

Material number

A numeric identifier (e.g. 1.0570) that maps to the symbolic grade for unambiguous ordering.

Delivery condition

The metallurgical state (e.g. N, M, +QT, +C) that fixes how the strength and toughness are reached.

Product-specific specification

A standard scoped to one product form — plate, section, flat or tube — not a universal grade table.

Applications & limitations

Where a grade needs technical review

Most EN selection pitfalls come from treating a grade name as a cross-product, cross-standard equivalent. These situations require review before a specification is finalised.

Cross-standard substitution

Matching an EN grade to an ASTM or API grade requires the full specification, not a name match.

Subgrade selection

S355J2 and S355M share strength but not toughness or delivery condition — the suffix must be stated.

Hot- vs cold-finished tube

EN 10210 and EN 10219 cover different products; hot-finished and cold-formed are not interchangeable.

Pressure-grade flat

EN 10028 grades carry weldability and elevated-temperature rules structural grades do not.

Stainless low-carbon variants

304 and 304L are distinct grades; the material number and 'L' suffix must both be confirmed.

Reinforcement ductility class

B500B and B500C differ in ductility class — strength alone does not define the product.

When in doubt: name the product form, the governing EN standard and the full grade designation. If the requirement crosses standards or product forms, it goes to technical review before quotation — no grade equivalence is asserted without confirmation against the complete standard and project specification.

What is an EN steel grade?

An EN steel grade is a material designation within a European standard (EN prefix) that sets out chemical composition, mechanical properties and tolerances for a specific product form. S235, S275 and S355 are common structural designations.

Can an EN grade be used as a universal equivalent for other standards?

No. EN grades are product-specific, not universal equivalents. Cross-standard matching is done against the complete specification and product form, and must be confirmed against the governing project specification.

What does the number in S275 or S355 mean?

The number is the minimum yield strength in megapascals (N/mm²), so S355 has a higher minimum yield than S275. A grade, however, is fixed by the full designation including delivery condition and toughness suffix.

What is the difference between a grade designation and a material number?

The symbolic designation (S355) names the strength; the material number (1.0570) is a numeric identifier that maps to it. Both should be confirmed together for unambiguous ordering.

Which EN standard applies to structural steel?

Structural sections and plate commonly fall under EN 10025, pressure plate under EN 10028, stainless under EN 10088, and structural hollow sections under EN 10210 or EN 10219. The product standard depends on the product form.
