Reading the chart with the right unit mass

A rebar weight chart is only as trustworthy as the unit mass it starts from. Reference a standard-specific nominal value, multiply by length and quantity for the estimate, and keep actual weighed shipment mass and its tolerance as separate fields.

    Standard-specific nominal unit mass

    Weight is referenced to a nominal unit mass (kg/m) under a stated standard and edition — ASTM A615/A615M, BS 4449/EN 10080 metric, or the project-specified standard. The chart names its source and revision; it never treats a diameter shortcut as acceptance data.

    Estimate method

    Once a verified unit mass is present, the estimate multiplies kg/m by ordered length and quantity. Every step carries units, source/revision and a rounding rule so an estimator can reproduce the result.

    Nominal vs lot-specific

    Nominal reference unit mass is not the same as the measured or weighed mass of a shipped heat. The chart keeps the estimate separate from weighbridge and invoice mass and their tolerances.

What the chart controls and what it leaves to the spec

The chart is one input to a purchase specification. Standards govern dimensions, unit mass, strength, elongation, chemistry and bend/rebend results; the commercial weighing basis is a separate contract field.

Diameter, nominal unit mass and their tolerance are controlled by the governing standard and edition. Confirm the permitted tolerance band on the actual size against the printed standard, not from this chart alone. The commercial weighing basis is a separate contract field.

Nominal mass is not weighbridge mass

The nominal unit mass supports estimating. The weighed shipment mass, its tolerance and the weighing method (e.g. weighbridge vs theoretical) are confirmed from the actual supplied heat and stated in the quotation.

Mechanical and chemistry inputs

Yield/tensile strength, elongation, chemistry, and bend/rebend results are specified separately under the standard. They do not change the unit mass estimate; they are part of the purchase specification and the MTC.

Where a weight chart is used wrongly

The most common rebar-weight failures are not arithmetic — they are using the wrong mass basis or treating an estimate as acceptance data. The controls below separate verified inputs from assumptions and route engineering questions to the right people.

Input error — using a diameter shortcut as acceptance data

A rounded diameter-to-weight formula is orientation only. It must not be presented as the unit mass of a shipped heat; use the verified standard/MTC value instead.

Invalid comparison — mixing nominal and weighed mass

A nominal reference unit mass and a weighbridge mass are different bases. Compare them only with the tolerance and weighing method stated, and never as if they were the same figure.

Uncertainty — unverified unit mass

If a verified unit-mass value is not available, the tool blocks the calculation rather than guessing, and asks for a buyer-entered kg/m from the standard, MTC or project dataset.

Evidence requirement — the document set
