Steel channel sizes: identify the series before comparing dimensions

Choose the channel series first, then the full designation. Use the verified reference entries to compare depth, width, thickness and nominal kg/m, estimate a theoretical quantity and carry the exact profile into an enquiry.

The compact chart is a dimensional reference, not stock, a full rolling catalogue or a load-capacity table. UPE, UPN and PFC are not interchangeable solely because their depths match.

Working technical tool

Reference lookup and theoretical mass

Select one of the verified reference entries. This is a compact reference set, not a catalogue of available stock. Unlisted sizes require a producer table; do not interpolate.

Reference inputs

Mass per metre is read from the cited producer entry. Nothing is estimated from the name.

Choose a reference entry, positive length and whole number of pieces.

The selected designation, dimensions, length and piece quantity populate the enquiry fields below. Grade and service approval remain separate.

Reference output

No reference result yet. The estimate applies a tabulated nominal mass per metre to the length and piece count you enter — it is a planning quantity, not a shipment weight.

No allowance for tolerances, coating, cutting waste or packing. Not a capacity check and not a measured shipment mass.

Complete the channel enquiry after the lookup

Build the specification the quotation is priced against

The reference calculator supplies designation and geometry for listed entries. Add grade, tolerances, service and commercial details before preparing the combined RFQ summary.

Fields marked * are required. Use mm for cross-section dimensions and tolerances, m for length, and an explicit quantity unit. Enter positive quantities and lengths; piece counts must be whole numbers. If a design detail is unresolved, describe the decision needed rather than guessing a grade.

Complete the specification to prepare a review summary.

0 of 14 required fields completed.

Your prepared specification will appear here. No enquiry has been sent.

The calculated mass uses a nominal producer value. Confirm profile geometry, material grade, tolerances and design approval separately.

Send the channel specification for review

The specification you prepared is attached exactly as you entered it — designation, grade, standard edition, dimensions, quantity basis, destination and required documents. Unresolved items travel with it as open questions rather than being resolved on your behalf.

Price on request. A specification review is the first step — it is not a priced quotation, and no availability is confirmed at this stage.

Method, formula and data conditions

Lookup method, units and data limits

Read h, b, web thickness, flange thickness and mass per metre from the cited producer entry for the exact series. The formula is arithmetic; what the result means is a separate question.

Formula and units

Theoretical total mass (kg) = tabulated mass (kg/m) × piece length (m) × number of pieces. Every numeric field on this page carries its unit explicitly — metric throughout, and no value is converted silently.

mass (kg) = kg/m × m × pieces

  • The result excludes tolerances, coating, cutting waste and packing.
  • It does not establish grade, capacity or actual shipped mass.
  • Do not derive a tapered-flange channel's exact mass from a simple rectangular sketch.
  • Do not interpolate unlisted sizes — obtain the producer table instead.

Procurement-grade worked comparisons

Worked channel comparisons for procurement

Each comparison shows the entry, the arithmetic and the decision it changes. The values are the producer entries tabulated on this page — none of them establishes stock, capacity or a material grade.

01Series substitution

Matched depth, different section

UPE 200 is listed at 22.8 kg/m with a 80 mm width; UPN 200 is 25.3 kg/m with a 75 mm width. The common 200 mm depth does not establish equivalent geometry. Check connection and design approval before changing series.

02Quantity basis

Theoretical quantity, not a shipment weight

For ten UPE 200 pieces at 6 m each: 22.8 kg/m × 6 m × 10 = 1,368 kg. Use this as a planning quantity and confirm the producer table, commercial mass basis and delivered quantity.

03Designation integrity

Series and designation matter

The PFC 260x90x35 reference has a tabulated mass of 34.8 kg/m. Do not treat the rounded designation component as a measured mass, or silently replace its series.

A theoretical total is an arithmetic result, not a commercial quantity. Ask whether pricing and dispatch use theoretical mass, measured mass or pieces before you compare two offers for the same channel.

Documents and acceptance

Documents that support channel-reference use

Reject ambiguous series, mixed units and capacity claims drawn from mass alone. For a channel not listed here, request the producer's full geometry and mass entry before calculating.

What the chart cannot certify

  • Geometry does not certify material grade or composition.
  • Nominal kg/m is not a measured shipment mass.
  • A sample certificate is not evidence for the shipped heat.
  • No capacity, stock, origin or approval is established here.

From reference to enquiry

Take the chart result into the correct product enquiry

The reference identifies a section. Which enquiry it belongs in depends on whether the designation resolved cleanly, needs another series checked, or needs an engineering decision first.

Where the channel is used

Use the channel in its approved structural context

The chart identifies the section; the application design determines whether it is suitable. None of the links below approves a substitution — each one is where the connection and design questions belong.

Questions the chart cannot answer

  • Whether a tapered-flange channel suits an existing connection detail.
  • Whether a parallel-flange substitute clears the bolt gauge.
  • Whether the member is adequate for the applied load cases.
  • Whether the offered mill rolls the geometry your drawing cites.

GCC destinations

Plan the GCC destination around the checked channel schedule

Confirm cut lengths, receiving access and document approval before requesting transport terms. Country flags identify the destination; quotation must confirm the supply route, origin and availability for this order.

Quantity and commercial basis

Keep the channel quantity and commercial basis aligned

Use the calculated mass as an enquiry estimate. Ask whether pricing and dispatch use theoretical mass, measured mass or pieces, and separate cutting, coating and packing from the raw-section quantity.

State these before comparing offers

  • Offered mill and origin.
  • Section schedule with every designation.
  • Quantity basis — theoretical mass, measured mass or pieces.
  • Processing scope: cutting, drilling, coating, packing.
  • Commercial validity and stated exclusions.
  • Incoterm with its named place and edition.
  • Who unloads at the receiving point.
  • The requested delivery window.

What requires written confirmation

  • Price and commercial validity.
  • Availability and production allocation.
  • Transport feasibility for the cut lengths.
  • Delivery dates and the receiving window.

None of these is established by a size chart, and none is confirmed by an automated estimate.

Expert insight

Can two 200 mm channels be treated as equivalent?

The cited UPE and UPN producer entries show different widths, thicknesses and nominal masses at the same 200 mm depth. A depth-only substitution is therefore incomplete.

Buyer questions

Channel chart questions

The answers below restate what the reference entries on this page actually support — and where the limit of a dimensional table begins.

Is a 200 mm channel enough to identify the product?

No. Give the series and full designation, then verify width, web, flange and geometry. At a nominal 200 mm depth the cited UPE and UPN entries differ in width, web thickness, flange thickness and nominal mass, so the depth alone does not fix which channel your drawing calls for.

Can UPN and UPE be exchanged?

Only after the designer checks the full geometry, connection and structural implications. UPN is a tapered-flange series and UPE is a parallel-flange series; they are not interchangeable on a like-for-like basis, and a substitution that looks reasonable on depth can change the connection detail.

Does kg/m establish load capacity?

No. Capacity depends on the design, grade, restraint, orientation and loading. A nominal mass per metre is an arithmetic property of the section, not a statement about how it performs. Adequacy for a given design is determined by your engineer against the governing code.

Is the calculated mass exact for delivery?

It is theoretical. Confirm the commercial measurement basis, tolerances, processing and delivered quantity. The estimate applies a tabulated nominal mass per metre to the length and piece count you enter, and allows nothing for permissible rolling deviations, coating, cutting waste or packing.

What if the size is missing?

Use the offered producer's verified table. Do not interpolate an unlisted designation. The reference set on this page is a compact selection rather than a rolling catalogue, so an absent size is a prompt to obtain the producer entry, not to derive one.

Does the source table promise S355 supply here?

No. The source is a dimensional reference; the actual grade, mill, availability and documents require quotation confirmation. A geometry table does not certify the material or the permissible dimensional deviations, and the grade cannot be inferred from the section designation.

Enquiry handoff

Request the channel you actually identified

Copy the lookup and completed section summary. Include the approved grade, tolerances and drawing reference so the offer can address the same channel.

Prepare and copy the summary above, then open the structural-steel RFQ and paste it into the message field. Add your name, company and reply email on that form. Supporting drawings can be shared through the destination's verified contact process.

This page prepares your enquiry locally. Opening the RFQ does not submit it. A submission is complete only when the receiving form returns a genuine acknowledgement.
