What is an alloy steel?

Alloy steel is carbon steel with deliberate additions such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel or vanadium to raise strength, toughness or wear resistance beyond what plain carbon can deliver.

Is high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel different from alloy steel?

HSLA is a subset of alloy steel with small alloying additions aimed primarily at higher yield strength and improved weldability while keeping carbon low. Its behaviour is often more weld-friendly than a similar-strength quenched-and-tempered alloy.
