Stainless steel is defined by chromium content and a passive surface layer rather than carbon or a coating. Setting that boundary prevents a grade from landing in the wrong category.

Stainless steel is iron alloyed with a minimum of about 10.5% chromium, which reacts with oxygen to form a thin, self-healing passive film. Within the family, austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and duplex grades are distinguished by structure and alloying — which sets corrosion resistance, strength and weldability.

Stainless carries excellent corrosion resistance, but its cost is higher than carbon. The fit line is explicit so a buyer does not pay for resistance the service does not need.

Which products fall under stainless steel?

How do I choose between 304 and 316?

By your corrosion environment. 304 suits general and indoor duty; 316 adds molybdenum for chloride and marine exposure. State the environment, not only the grade.

Which standard applies to my stainless grade?

ASTM, EN or API, whichever your project names. Flat product may follow ASTM A240; pipe commonly follows ASTM A312.

Is stainless simply coated carbon?

No. Its corrosion resistance comes from a passive chromium layer in the alloy, not a coating. A coated carbon grade is a different category.
