Written specification before commitment
The designation, coating system, dimensions, tolerance basis and document set are confirmed in writing before the order is placed — not inferred from the enquiry wording.
Traceability through the order
Enquiry, quotation, order acknowledgement and certificate stay linked, so any party in the chain can see what was bought against what was specified.
Dimensional questions answered explicitly
Thickness and dimension queries are resolved against the tolerance basis you nominate, rather than against a nominal-only description.
Evidence requirement: before you award, ask for the order acknowledgement to state the designation, the coating type and mass, the dimensions and the document set in the same terms your project specification uses. If those two documents disagree at acknowledgement stage, the discrepancy will not resolve itself later in the chain.

- We cannot confirm that a coating system suits your exposure condition — that depends on the design life and environment of your project, which we do not hold.
- We cannot approve a reduced coating mass as equivalent for an application — acceptance is your approver's decision, recorded against the specification.
- We cannot certify the material for a project — we supply to the specification and document what was supplied.
- We cannot absorb a late specification change into the same order — a change to the coating or the dimensional basis is a new order, and saying so up front is cheaper than discovering it at goods-in.
The three fields that decide a coated-sheet order
Coating system
Type and mass together. Neither is implied by the DX51D designation, and a quotation that names only the designation has not answered this field at all.
Dimensional basis
Nominal values with units, the tolerance basis, and whether base or coated thickness is referenced. Agree it before prices are compared.
Application and forming
What the part will do in service and what happens to it before it gets there. This is what lets a supplier flag the first two as under-specified.

Risk control: stages 2 and 3 are the ones buyers most often defer to the supplier. Both must close before the enquiry is issued — once production has started at stage 5, the coating and dimensional basis cannot be changed without a new order.
Source 03 — Coating metallurgy
What a galvanized coating actually does to the sheet beneath it
A hot-dip coating is not a paint layer sitting on steel. It is a metallurgically bonded zinc-based system whose behaviour under forming and in service depends on how it was produced and how thick it is.
The coating protects by sacrificial action
Zinc is less noble than iron, so where the coating is continuous it acts as a barrier, and where it is cut or scratched the surrounding zinc corrodes preferentially and continues to protect the exposed steel at the cut edge. This is the property that distinguishes galvanized sheet from a barrier coating, and it is the reason coating mass — not appearance — is the meaningful specification figure.
Coating mass is an areal figure, not a thickness
Coating mass is expressed as a mass per unit area of sheet, with a designation taken from the applicable standard. Two panels quoting the same coating mass designation can still differ in how that mass is distributed between the two faces unless the face split is stated. Where a minimum local coating mass applies in addition to the average, that also comes from the standard rather than from a supplier summary.
Forming changes what the coating must tolerate
A coating that performs on a flat panel is not automatically suited to a tight bend, a drawn feature or a profiled section. Bending and profiling impose strain on the coating, and the coating system, surface treatment and base-metal designation chosen for a flat application are not interchangeable with those chosen for an aggressive forming operation. The forming route is therefore an input to the coating decision, not an afterthought.
Storage and ageing are part of the picture
Coated sheet is affected by how it is stored and how long it is held. Stacked, damp or poorly ventilated storage — and extended periods before forming — can produce surface conditions that are not defects of the coil but are nonetheless rejected at goods-in if the acceptance basis was never written down. Surface condition at receipt should be assessed against an agreed reference, not against a recollection of what a sample looked like.
Where the coating question is actually decided
The coating type, coating mass and surface treatment are fixed by the standard and by the application requirement — not by a supplier's stock position. The designation alone does not carry them, so a quotation that names only the designation has not yet answered the coating question. Settle it in the enquiry, in writing, and record the answer in the order acknowledgement.
Decision implication: treat the coating specification as a derived requirement — it follows from the forming route and the service environment. Writing the designation without the coating leaves the most consequential part of a galvanized sheet order undefined.
Source 06 — Equivalence and substitution
Where coated-sheet substitutions go wrong
A substitution is only as safe as the number of properties the two specifications actually share. On coated sheet, that number is usually smaller than the designation suggests.
The designation is not the whole product
A designation fixes a base-metal category within a standard. Coating type, coating mass, surface quality and surface treatment are selected separately and are not implied by it. Two quotations carrying the same designation can therefore describe materially different products, and the difference sits precisely in the fields most often left off the enquiry.
Different standards are different systems
Coated-sheet standards from different bodies use different designation structures, different coating-mass series and different surface-quality classifications. A “closest equivalent” across two such systems is a judgement about specific properties, not a translation. Whoever accepts the substitution carries the responsibility for that judgement, and it should be recorded as a decision rather than appearing as an assumption inside a quotation.
The substitution decision belongs to the designer
Whether an alternative coated sheet is acceptable for a given application is a design decision that depends on the forming route, the exposure condition and the acceptance criteria of the project. We can supply documentation for a candidate material and answer technical questions about it. We do not approve equivalence, and we will not present an alternative as equivalent on our own authority.

Evidence requirement: any substitution accepted on a coated-sheet order should be recorded as a written, referenceable instruction — naming the property that was compared, the source of the comparison and the person who accepted it — before the material is ordered. An approval that exists only in a phone call is not an approval that survives an audit or a claim.
Source 08 — Documentation
What a mill test certificate does and does not prove
An MTC is a statement about the material it identifies — not about the order, the coating selection or the application. Reading one correctly is a skill, and reading it against the order description is the control.
It identifies a heat or lot, not your part
The certificate traces to the material it was issued for. It does not establish that the material you received is from that lot, and it does not establish fitness for your application. The link between the two is the identification physically carried on the bundle, pack or coil — which is why identification at receipt is the step that makes the certificate worth anything.
It must be read against the order, not in isolation
A certificate can be internally consistent and still not match what was ordered — a different coating mass, a different surface treatment, a different tolerance basis. The check is a three-way comparison between the order acknowledgement, the certificate and the identification on the material. Where the three disagree, the discrepancy is a commercial question for the supplier before it becomes a site question.
Additional documents answer different questions
A declaration of conformity, a coating-mass record and a dimensional inspection record each address a separate part of the requirement. Requesting “the MTC” as a single item usually means the coating and dimensional evidence never arrives — and it is exactly those two that a galvanized sheet order depends on. Name each document you require in the enquiry.

Risk control: name every document you require in the enquiry and repeat the list in the order acknowledgement. A document set agreed only after dispatch is a document set you may not receive, and material that cannot be traced to an agreed document set is material you cannot release to a project that requires traceability.
Selection
Choosing between coated-sheet routes before you enquire
Galvanized sheet is one route among several coated flat-product options. The first decision is which family of product the application actually needs — the designation is a consequence of that, not a starting point.
Start from the exposure and the forming route
Two questions decide most of the specification: what the part will be exposed to in service, and what forming operation it will pass through before it gets there. Those two answers determine the coating family, then the coating mass, then the surface treatment — in that order. A designation chosen first and justified afterwards inverts the process, and it is the single most common cause of a coated-sheet order that has to be renegotiated after award.
Decide whether this is a galvanized or a painted product
Continuously hot-dip coated sheet and organic-coated (pre-painted) sheet are different product families with different standards, different inspection criteria and different handling requirements. If the application needs a finished colour or a specific surface appearance, a galvanized product alone will not deliver it, and a pre-painted product carries its own constraints. Settle the family before obtaining prices — quotations for two families are not comparable.

Decision implication: place the requirement in a product family and write down the exposure and forming inputs before you request prices. An enquiry that starts from a designation and works backwards will attract offers that cannot be compared with one another.

Standards, properties and dimensional basis
Three separate questions decide whether a DX51D quotation matches your requirement: which standard governs, which properties are being asserted, and on what dimensional and tolerance basis. They are answered by different documents.

The governing standard is the one your project names
DX51D sits within the EN 10346 family for continuously hot-dip coated steel flat products. If your project specification cites an edition of that standard, that edition governs. If it cites a different coated-sheet standard, the two are separate systems and the substitution question belongs to your approver. This page does not treat any standard as a substitute for another.

Decision implication: the three questions above are answered by three different documents — your specification, the mill certificate and the dimensional record. Obtain all three before you compare offers, and reject any quotation that leaves the tolerance basis or the coating designation unstated.
Quality and traceability
Identification, packing and documents — the three points of control
Traceability is not a document that arrives after the fact. It is a chain built at three points, and it breaks at whichever of the three is treated as a formality.
Identification
Each bundle, pack or coil should carry identification that ties it to the lot the documents were issued for. Where that link is missing or illegible, the material becomes untraceable regardless of how complete the paperwork is — the certificate describes a lot, not a bundle. Record the identification actually observed at receipt, not the identification that was expected.
Packing and protection
Coated sheet is vulnerable in transit and in storage. The packing method, the use of moisture protection and the handling arrangement are agreed with the order and checked at receipt, because coating damage arising from transit or storage is difficult to attribute afterwards. Where the material is to be held before forming, the storage condition is part of the control, not an operational afterthought.
Documents at the point of delivery
Documents should arrive with the material, not after it. A certificate that follows the consignment by days or weeks leaves the material quarantined in the meantime, and it removes the opportunity to raise a discrepancy while the consignment is still open on both sides. State in the order that documents travel with the goods.

What we can and cannot do at this stage

Risk control: write the three controls into the order — identification standard, packing and protection method, and documents travelling with the goods. Each is inexpensive to agree in advance and expensive to reconstruct after delivery.
Applications
Where coated sheet is used, and what that changes
A designation that performs in one application is not automatically suited to another. Each of the three routes below places different demands on the coating, the surface treatment and the dimensional basis.
Roofing
Roofing places the coating in permanent weather exposure with cut edges at every sheet end and fixing point. The coating system and coating mass carry the durability expectation, and the cut-edge protection that galvanizing provides is doing real work at each of those edges. Dimensional consistency matters because sheet ends and laps have to align across a run.

Cladding adds an appearance requirement to the durability requirement. Panels are seen in raking light, so surface condition and consistency between panels become acceptance criteria in their own right, and the surface treatment has to suit any subsequent finishing. The agreed visual reference matters as much here as the coating mass.

Fabrication puts the coating through forming, cutting, joining and handling before the part ever reaches site. The forming route is the dominant input to the coating decision, and the fabrication method — shear, laser, press brake, roll forming — changes what the coating and surface treatment have to tolerate.

Surface treatment
What happens after forming — painting, joining, prolonged storage — determines which treatment is compatible, and compatibility is a decision for your process.
Dimensional basis
The tolerance that matters follows from the application: lap alignment on a roof, panel consistency on a façade, forming allowance in a fabrication shop.
Decision implication: name the application in the enquiry. It is the single input that lets a supplier tell you which of your specification fields is under-specified — and it costs one line to provide.

Risk control: where one project covers more than one exposure condition, do not let a single specification cover all of them by default. The cheapest route is to state each condition separately in the enquiry and let the supply position be quoted against each — the alternative is discovering at goods-in that the general specification is under-specified for the most exposed location.

The destination determines the documentation the consignment has to carry, the packing that protects it in transit and the storage conditions it will meet on arrival. All three affect coated sheet more than they affect uncoated product, because a coating that arrives in good condition and is then stored badly can still fail inspection. Name the delivery point and, where it is known, the storage arrangement.
Decision implication: select your market above and set the destination in the RFQ. An enquiry that omits the destination cannot be quoted against the terms that will actually apply to delivery.

Availability, pricing and what a quotation will and will not state
Coated sheet is quoted against your specification, not from a catalogue. What you receive depends directly on how completely the specification was written — and on which questions the quotation leaves open.
Availability is confirmed against the order, not published
Coated sheet availability moves with the specification: a change of coating mass, surface treatment or thickness can move a requirement between sources entirely. We confirm availability against the specific combination you enquire about rather than publishing a stock position that would be out of date by the time it was read. That is why the specification has to be complete before availability is meaningful.
Price on request — and why
Coated sheet is priced on the specification, the quantity, the destination and the delivery terms together. A published figure that ignored any of those would mislead more than it informed. Every price we give is issued against your stated requirement, with the basis recorded, so that two offers can be compared on the same terms.
What a quotation should state back to you
- The standard and edition being offered.
- The coating type, coating mass designation and surface treatment.
- The dimensional basis and tolerance reference.
- The document set that will accompany the material.
- The delivery terms and the named destination.

Comparing offers on a like-for-like basis
The lowest number is only the lowest number once every offer describes the same product on the same terms. Before comparing, check each quotation against the five lines in the table above; where one is silent, that is not a saving — it is an open point that will be settled later, usually at your cost. Ask for the missing line in writing rather than assuming the offer includes it.
Decision implication: issue a complete specification, then require every quotation to state the same five lines back. An offer that omits the coating designation, the tolerance basis or the document set is not comparable with one that includes them — regardless of the figure.

- A finished colour is required — the requirement is an organic-coated product, not a hot-dip coated one.
- No coating is needed at all — where the part is painted after fabrication and the substrate only has to be formable and weldable, an uncoated hot-rolled or cold-rolled route is usually the right enquiry.
- The part is a structural section — beams, channels and angles are a different product family with their own standards and are not sheet.
- The requirement is pipe or tube — hollow sections and pipes are supplied to different standards and inspected differently.

Placing the requirement in a family
Flat product or long product is the first split. Sheet, plate, coil and strip are all flat; beams, channels, angles and bars are long. The two are supplied to different standards, inspected differently and priced against different bases. A requirement that has not been placed on one side of that split cannot be quoted meaningfully.
Coated versus uncoated is the second split
Within flat product, whether the surface is protected matters more than any other single choice. An uncoated substrate that will be painted after fabrication is a different enquiry from a product that arrives with its protective coating already applied. Choosing between them is a durability and process decision, and it belongs before the designation is written.
Standard family is the third
European and American coated-sheet standards are separate systems with different designations, different coating series and different surface classifications. A requirement written against one family cannot simply be re-issued against the other without an approval step. Knowing which family your project specification lives in is what stops a substitution question arising after award.
Decision implication: answer the three splits — flat or long, coated or uncoated, which standard family — before writing a designation into an enquiry. A requirement that has answered all three is one a supplier can price and a designer can approve without a second round of questions.

Limitations
DX51D does not by itself identify coating mass, surface quality or treatment, dimensional tolerances, organic coating, profile geometry or application approval.
