Material — Hydrated Iron Oxide

Goethite iron ore

Goethite names a mineral, not a specification. It is a hydrated iron oxide, and calling a lot goethite describes the mineralogy it belongs to — not the iron content it will assay, the impurities it carries or how it will behave in a process.

That distinction is the whole of the buying problem. Two goethite-bearing lots are two different materials that share a family name, and only their own determinations say what you are being offered. A goethite label describes a hydrated iron oxide mineralogy, not a guaranteed Fe grade, impurity profile, sizing, moisture or reduction behaviour. Compare offers on the lot's own assay and test data, and treat hematite and limonite as mineralogical neighbours rather than interchangeable grades.

Price on request. No assay, sizing, stock or performance claim is made on this page.

Hydrated means it carries water

The mineral holds water within its structure, so heating it drives that water off and shows up in the mass balance through a process. That makes the loss on ignition a property of the lot rather than something the iron figure implies.

What the label carries, and what it does not

A mineral name is a starting point for testing

Naming the mineral tells you which family the material belongs to, and therefore which determinations are worth asking for. It does not answer them.

What the mineralogy establishes

  • Which iron oxide family the material belongs to.
  • That the material is hydrated, so heating drives off water.
  • Which determinations the lot is worth testing for.
  • How the material relates to its mineral neighbours.

What it does not establish

  • The iron content the lot will assay.
  • Which impurities are present, or at what level.
  • How much water the material gives off on heating.
  • Its size distribution, its moisture, or its behaviour in a furnace.

The practical consequence: treat the mineral name as the list of questions, not the answers. An offer that states only "goethite iron ore" has told you which family the material belongs to and nothing about the lot on the table.

A mineral specimen examined as a solid mass, illustrating why a mineral name describes a family rather than a grade.
Naming the mineral identifies the family. What the lot contains is established by testing it, not by recognising it.

Two assumptions worth checking

Where a goethite label is read as saying more than it does

Both of these start from a reasonable instinct — that a named mineral tells you something — and both end somewhere the documentation does not support.

That goethite and limonite are the same thing

They are not, and collapsing them costs you information. Goethite is a named mineral species with a recognisable structure. Limonite is a broader descriptive grouping for hydrated iron oxide material that is not consistently one species — a field term rather than a mineral name.

Material offered as limonite may contain goethite, may be dominated by it, or may contain little of it. So where a lot is described as limonite, the goethite content is one of the things to confirm rather than assume — and a goethite figure is not a description of a limonite ore body.

The neighbouring page sets out the limonite grouping on its own terms. It is a comparison, not a substitute for this one.

How limonite is described

That the label fixes an impurity profile for the cargo

It does not. What accompanies goethite in a given ore body depends on that deposit, so no fixed impurity profile follows from the name — for this cargo or any other. A profile you were given for one lot describes that lot.

Each component should be reported separately rather than as a combined figure, because the ratio between them is often what a receiving process is actually sensitive to. A single combined number hides the part that matters.

Where the material is going into a plant that runs its own chain, acceptance is set against that plant's basis rather than a general grade.

What an internal acceptance basis changes

Mineralogy-to-acceptance decision tree

From what the material is, to whether the offer can carry it

Five questions, worked in order. Answer each as your offer currently stands; the tree reports the branch that follows — including the ones where an assumption is being made rather than an answer given.

  1. Step 1 — Establish what is actually being offered

Is goethite the dominant mineral here, or one component of a mixed ore body?
  2. Step 2 — Assay the iron content

Is the iron figure determined on this lot, by a named method, on a stated basis?
  3. Step 3 — Account for the water

Is the loss on ignition stated, together with the portion basis it was determined on?
  4. Step 4 — Settle the moisture basis

Does the offer say whether the tonne is quoted wet or dry?
  5. Step 5 — Match the evidence to the receiving route

Has the material's behaviour been tested against the route it will actually enter?

0 of 5 steps answered.

Nothing answered yet

No branch is shown because nothing has been stated. A mineral name on its own is not evidence, so the tree waits for your answers before it says anything.

Method and limits

  • No assay, impurity profile, sizing or behaviour is supplied, suggested or defaulted here.
  • The tree reports which steps your offer closes. It does not judge whether a figure suits any process.
  • Nothing selected is stored or transmitted until you choose to send it.

What else to look at, and why it is not a substitute

Each of these settles a different question. None of them stands in for another — where a link is a comparison rather than a replacement, it is labelled as one.

Buyer FAQ

Questions that come up before a goethite offer is compared

These are the points buyers and technical traders raise once a mineral name is on the table and the figures are not.

Is goethite a grade of iron ore?
No. Goethite is a hydrated iron oxide mineral, and naming it describes a mineralogy rather than a specification. Two goethite-bearing lots can differ in iron content, in the impurities they carry, in how much water they give off on heating, in size and in moisture. The mineral name tells you what family the material belongs to; the lot's own determinations tell you what you are buying.
Does goethite content mean the ore will behave a particular way in a furnace?
Not on its own, and no universal reduction behaviour should be assumed from the name. How a lot behaves in a process depends on its own composition, how it is prepared and the conditions it meets. A mineral label is a starting point for what to test, not a prediction of the result — which is why the test package is built from the lot rather than from the label.
Why does loss on ignition matter for a goethite-bearing material?
Because the mineral is hydrated, heating it drives off water, and that shows up in the mass balance through a process. The loss on ignition is determined on the material as delivered, so it is a property of the lot rather than something the iron figure implies. It is worth stating whether a figure you hold was determined on a dried or as-received portion, because that changes what it describes.
Can I compare a goethite offer against a hematite offer directly?
Only on figures determined the same way. They are different minerals, so a comparison is mineralogical and bounded rather than a substitution. If both offers state iron content by the same method, on the same mass basis, with the same components separated out, those figures can be placed side by side. Where the bases differ, the two numbers are not describing the same thing.
Is goethite the same thing as limonite?
No, and treating them as one term loses information. Goethite is a named mineral species with a recognisable structure. Limonite is a broader descriptive grouping applied to hydrated iron oxide material that is not consistently one species — it is a field term rather than a mineral name, and it may describe material in which goethite is present, dominant, or largely absent. Where a lot is offered as limonite, the goethite content is one of the things to confirm rather than assume.
Can I assume a fixed impurity profile from a goethite label?
No. The mineral name does not carry a guaranteed impurity profile for a cargo, and no fixed profile should be assumed from it. What accompanies the goethite in a given ore body depends on that deposit, and the lot's own determinations are what state it. Each component should be reported separately rather than as a combined figure, because the ratio between them is often the thing the receiving process is sensitive to.
What documents should I ask for with a goethite enquiry?
The mineralogical identification and the method behind it; the iron figure with its analytical method and edition; each impurity component stated separately rather than combined; loss on ignition, with whether the portion was dried or as-received; the moisture figure with an explicit wet or dry mass basis; and the size distribution with the method and sieve series that produced it. Confirm what lot the certificate covers, since it describes what was sampled rather than guaranteeing a later shipment.
