Weathering Steel Hollow Section

A weathering steel hollow section is chosen for the surface it is meant to form, not for a strength advantage, and that surface only develops where the member is allowed to wet and dry and where its runoff is managed. The exposure decides the answer before the grade does: standing water, chloride-laden atmospheres, sheltered positions and a detail that traps moisture all work against the material, however the section is described on an enquiry. Describe where the member sits and how water leaves it first, then confirm the grade, standard and edition, shape, dimensions with units and the finish you intend.

Decide the exposure before the material

Weathering Steel Hollow Section is chosen for a surface, not a strength

The reason to specify this material is the appearance and the corrosion mechanism of an uncoated, exposed surface — so the conditions that let that surface form are part of the specification, not a detail for site. Describe the wetting and drying, the drainage and the appearance you will accept first, then the standard, grade, shape, dimensions and finish.

Exposure — wetting and drying

The surface this material is chosen for develops only where the member regularly wets and then dries. Periods of standing moisture, a sheltered position that never dries, or continuous damp work against the material rather than for it. Describe the exposure honestly before anything else is decided.

Runoff, drainage and staining

Water has to leave the member and the detail. Where runoff cannot drain, or where it washes onto an adjacent surface, the appearance the designer expects does not follow — and the staining is part of the design decision, not a defect to be discovered on site.

Governing standard & edition

The standard and its edition fix scope, grade range, tolerances, testing and ordering requirements. Name the edition so the mechanical, dimensional and document basis is auditable rather than assumed from the material name.

Shape, dimensions & tolerance

Shape class (square, rectangular or circular), nominal dimensions with units, wall and the applicable tolerance regime fix the piece. A nominal chart value is not an acceptance tolerance unless the governing document says so.

Read the position, not the material name

Where the exposure decides the answer

A weathering surface forms where the member repeatedly wets and dries. Put the same section in a position that never dries, in a detail that traps moisture against it, or under runoff that cannot drain, and the surface it was chosen for does not develop as intended. The material name does not carry that judgement — the position does. That is why the exposure and the drainage belong on the enquiry ahead of the grade, and why an aggressive atmosphere needs to be stated rather than assumed to be suitable.

Specification gate

Build an enquiry that states the exposure

This gate asks for the exposure and drainage the member will see alongside the commercial inputs, because those decide whether the material suits the position at all. It separates confirmed inputs from open items, so an exposure that has not been assessed stays visibly open rather than being assumed suitable.

Confirmed inputs kept separate from open items

The summary separates confirmed inputs from open items so the RFQ never fills a missing value by assumption. Standard and edition, grade or material route, product form, delivery condition, dimensions and tolerance regime, exposure and drainage, fabrication requirements and the surface you intend are each held as their own decision — none is inferred from a nearby route, and every open item stays visibly open until the responsible party confirms it.

Price on request. Availability, origin, certification and delivery timing are confirmed only against the live enquiry — never invented upfront. Suitability for the exposure remains the designer’s assessment against the governing specification.

Standards, grades, dimensions & condition

Write the specification so offers can be compared

State the standard and edition, the full grade, the section family, nominal dimensions with units, the applicable tolerance regime, the delivery condition, whether the surface is to remain uncoated, the length or cut requirement, and the inspection and document scope. Do not turn a nominal chart value into an acceptance tolerance unless the governing document says so.

Exposure, drainage & appearance

The wetting and drying pattern, the sheltering, the runoff path and the surfaces the stained runoff reaches are the inputs that decide whether this material suits the position. They belong in the specification with the section, because an appearance outcome discovered on site cannot be specified after the fact.

Standard, edition & grade

The governing standard and its edition fix the grade range, the atmospheric-corrosion requirement, the mechanical minimums, tolerances and testing. Name the standard and edition, then the grade, rather than a family nickname that reads the same across two different standards.

Dimensions, wall & tolerance regime

State the section family, nominal dimensions with units, wall, length or cut requirement together, and name the tolerance regime the governing document references. A nominal chart value is not an acceptance tolerance.

Reference before ordering

Confirm a dimension or size input before it reaches the RFQ

Use a reference to check scope and terminology, then compare that scope with the project requirement. A reference does not replace the contract documents for the actual order.

This table is a decision aid only. It states no corrosion rate, service life or performance figure, because those depend on the specific atmosphere, the detailing and the governing specification. Suitability for a given exposure remains the designer’s assessment; every dimension, tolerance, condition or test value is confirmed against the governing standard, edition and the material certificate before quotation. Price on request.

Documents & inspection

Match documents and inspection to the order

A weathering certificate records the material, not the exposure. The certificate can confirm the grade and the atmospheric-corrosion requirement of the standard; it cannot confirm that the member will sit in a position where that surface forms. Decide what your inspector needs to see, name the standard and edition the certificate should reference, and confirm that what you are asking for can be supplied for the consignment.

Material evidence
  • Material certification and traceability for the steel supplied, per consignment
  • Chemistry and mechanical test record against the governing standard, edition and grade
  • Atmospheric-corrosion or surface evidence only where the order requires it
Inspection records
  • Dimensional and inspection records where the order requires them
  • Surface and condition checks against the agreed route
  • Heat / lot traceability to the shipped consignment
Shipment documents
  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Shipment / origin documents only where applicable to the consignment
  • Customs declaration inputs for the destination

What is evidenced, and what stays order-specific

  • Material certification and traceability are requested for the steel supplied, against the governing standard, edition and grade — never an assumed certificate.
  • Atmospheric-corrosion and surface evidence is requested only where the governing standard and the order call for it, and the record is named in the enquiry.
  • Availability of any certificate or approval is confirmed for the actual supply — not assumed from this page or from a nearby route.

Operating duty

Where the position changes the choice

Open an application page when the end use changes the exposure — a truss that drains freely and a column base sitting in moisture place very different demands on the same material. Where the position does not change, the exposure and finish decision above stands. The same weathering family behaves very differently by where the member sits, how water leaves it and what the runoff reaches.

Architectural work

Commercial inputs

Commercial inputs that remain quotation-dependent

The inputs that make this order quotable are the exposure and drainage position, whether the surface stays uncoated, the grade and standard with its edition, the shape and dimensions with units, the delivery condition, the quantity and unit basis, the documents, the destination and the named Incoterms place. Availability and delivery timing are confirmed against the live shipment.

Carry the enquiry into the commercial department

Turn the exposure and drainage position, the intended surface, the standard and edition, grade, shape, dimensions, delivery condition, documents, quantity, destination and Incoterms named place into one copyable summary. The commercial department checks that the uncoated route you have described is the route being quoted, and raises an exposure that reads as unsuitable early — before it turns into a site problem.

Price on request — freight, duty, availability and delivery timing are confirmed with your quotation.

Technical reference

Confirm the source scope, then compare it with the requirement

Use the standard to confirm how the atmospheric-corrosion requirement for this material is defined and what the grade range covers, then compare that with the position your member will actually occupy. A standard defines the material; it does not assess the exposure.

ASTM International — A588/A588M

Published standard scope · reviewed for scope and terminology

ASTM A588/A588M is a high-strength low-alloy structural steel specification that includes an atmospheric-corrosion requirement and grades commonly used for exposed, unpainted service. Use the reference to confirm its own published scope and terminology, then compare that scope with the project requirement for the actual order.

What this means for your order: the reference helps fix the questions that must be answered in the RFQ — the standard and edition, the grade, the section shape, the nominal dimensions with units and the tolerance regime. Conformity, certification and commercial outcomes remain separate, verification-dependent steps after the technical product description is complete.

What it does not cover: the reference does not prove Noor Deira Steel inventory, price, certification, local presence or project approval, and it does not establish that the material suits a particular atmosphere, drainage detail or service life. Verify the purchase order and the current licensed standard, because a project specification can impose requirements beyond it.

What a complete enquiry improves

A complete enquiry settles the exposure question up front

Weathering enquiries go wrong when the material is chosen for how it will look and the position is left to site. Stating the wetting and drying, the drainage and the runway staining alongside the section means the material is confirmed against the position it will actually occupy — and an unsuitable exposure is raised before the order, not after installation.

Buyer concern

Selection from the material name

Evidence-led answer

Every value is forced against the governing standard and edition, grade, shape, nominal dimensions, tolerance regime and finish — never assumed from the words "weathering steel".

A weathering hollow section whose basis is an auditable, order-driving input set.

Buyer concern

An exposure that never dries

Evidence-led answer

The enquiry states the wetting and drying pattern, the sheltering and the drainage path as their own inputs, so the material is confirmed against the position it will actually occupy.

A material chosen for the exposure it will see rather than the look it was chosen for.

Buyer concern

Automatic substitution between nearby routes

Evidence-led answer

The enquiry keeps the standard, grade, product form, delivery condition, dimensions, tolerance regime and finish as separate decisions, so a nearby route is only a comparison until the governing requirement accepts it.

A section that matches the governing document rather than a similar-sounding catalogue line.

Buyer concern

Staining discovered after installation

Evidence-led answer

The runoff path and the surfaces it washes onto are named before the order, so the appearance outcome is a design decision rather than a site surprise.

A detail whose stained runoff lands somewhere the design already accepted.

Buyer concern

Evidence-led answer

Buyer FAQ

Questions to settle before ordering

The questions a weathering enquiry turns on: whether the surface really forms where the member will sit, whether the site suits it, why drainage matters so much, and what has to be settled before the order is placed.

Will a weathering hollow section stay rust-free?
No. A weathering surface develops a stable, tightly adhering oxide layer over time, but it is still an oxide layer, and it only forms where the member regularly wets and dries. Where that cycle does not happen — standing water, a permanently damp or sheltered position, or trapped moisture inside a closed section — the surface does not behave as intended. The exposure decides it, not the material name.
Does it suit a coastal or industrial site?
It depends on the site, and a blanket yes would be wrong. Chloride-laden coastal atmospheres and some industrial atmospheres are known to work against an uncoated weathering surface, and where the exposure is aggressive enough that an uncoated route is not the answer, a coated or a different alloy route is the comparison to make. State the actual atmosphere and the position, and confirm the suitability against the governing specification rather than assuming it from the material family.
Why does drainage decide so much?
Because the material needs the wet-and-dry cycle to form the surface it was chosen for. Where runoff cannot drain, or where a detail traps moisture against the section, the member sits in the very condition the material does not like. Runoff also carries the surface's staining onto whatever it reaches, so where the water goes is an appearance decision that belongs in the design, not on site.
What has to be confirmed before the order?
The exposure and drainage the member will actually see, the intended appearance and acceptance of runoff staining, the standard and edition, the grade, the section shape, nominal dimensions with units, the delivery condition, and the inspection and document scope. A weathering designation on its own is not a complete purchase specification.
What belongs in the RFQ?
Where the member sits and how it drains, whether the surface is intended to remain uncoated, the intended grade and finish, the standard and edition, the section shape, nominal dimensions with units, wall, length or cut requirement, quantity and unit basis, destination and documents.
