Iron Ore Specifications Guidefor a testable acceptance schedule

A complete iron ore specification should state product form, chemistry, moisture, size distribution, sampling and test methods, application-specific physical/metallurgical requirements, lot/inspection basis, documents and commercial delivery fields. Do not fill absent limits with generic defaults.

No tolerance, limit or default is inferred on this page — absent values stay absent.

Iron Ore Specification Completeness Checker

Audit a draft specification before it becomes an RFQ

Enter the acceptance fields the specification will be judged on. The checker reports what is present, what is missing, and where a figure has been stated without the basis that makes it testable. It never supplies a limit, a tolerance or a default.

Completeness result

This checker audits a draft specification — it does not grade the material or rank suppliers. Add the acceptance fields on the left and it will report which are present, which are missing, and which figures have been stated without the basis that makes them testable. Nothing is scored until you enter something.

Evidence warning

Completing this form does not confirm availability, compliance or suitability, and no tolerance limit has been supplied by this tool. Every limit above must come from the buyer's own requirements or a verified supplier value.

Copyable RFQ summary

Specification basis: buyer-defined acceptance schedule. No tolerance, limit or default has been inferred by this tool — every stated value above was entered by the buyer.
Availability, price, origin, lead time and freight are quotation-dependent and are verified against current company data for the exact consignment.
Transfer to RFQ

The checker is deterministic: the same inputs always produce the same report, and the report describes completeness only. It contains no hidden weighting and no supplier ranking.

Method, Basis & Data Conditions

How a specification becomes testable

A specification is only decision-grade when every figure in it names the basis it was determined on. This is the method the page applies — and the conditions under which it does not apply.

  1. 01

    Name the product form

Lump, fines, pellets and concentrate are specified as separate products. Until the form is fixed, every downstream figure is comparing different feeds.

  2. 02

    State chemistry with its basis

Fe and gangue values are only comparable when the grading basis and the test method that produced them are named alongside the number.

  3. 03

State moisture and size with their method

Moisture decides whether a tonne is wet or dry; sizing decides which process the ore can feed. Both need the method used to establish them.

  4. 04

Bind it to a lot and a test

Sampling standard and lot definition determine what an acceptance result actually represents, and which documents must accompany the consignment.

Unit system

Chemistry is expressed as a percentage by mass on the stated grading basis. Mass is expressed in metric tonnes, and the basis — wet or dry — must be named with any tonnage.

Source hierarchy

Buyer requirements override supplier defaults; a named standard and edition overrides a trade grade label; a lot-specific analysis overrides a generic product description. Apply them in that order.

Applicability limits

This method describes how to structure a specification. It does not set commercial acceptance limits, does not confirm that a given material meets them, and does not establish availability for any route.

Procurement-grade Worked Example

One hypothetical specification, worked through

Every value below is illustrative example data — not a live quote, not a benchmark, and not a Noor Deira Steel figure. It shows the shape of a complete specification and where a gap would have stopped it.

Hypothetical worked example showing specification input, method, result, interpretation, decision impact and verification step.
StageInput (example data)Method appliedInterpretation & decision impact
Draft received“62% Fe iron ore fines, 25,000 t, Jeddah”Core-field check against the acceptance listReturns verify-first. Product form and Fe label are present, but no chemistry limits, moisture basis, sizing, sampling method or Incoterm exist. Two suppliers could answer this and mean different materials.
Gap closedFe 62% natural basis (example); SiO2 max 6.0%; Al2O3 max 2.5%; P max 0.08%; S max 0.05% (example)Chemistry stated with grading basis and test method requestedChemistry is now testable. The grading basis is what makes the 62% figure reproducible — the same material reported on a dried basis would not carry the same number.
Basis gap caughtMoisture 8.5% (example) — no mass basis statedBasis-gap rule: a moisture figure without a tonnage basisReturns verify-first even though every core field is filled. An 8.5% moisture reading is meaningless for comparison until it is tied to WMT or DMT, because the quantity being bought changes with it.
CompleteAll fields present (example): fines, sizing 10–30 mm by ISO 4701 sieve, sampled per ISO 3082, lot = per shipment, CFR Jeddah, valid 30 daysFull completeness check against the acceptance listReports complete — which is a statement about the specification, not the material. The RFQ can now be issued, and every supplier answers the same question.

Verification step

Before any worked-example figure is used in a real enquiry, confirm it against the buyer's own governing document or a supplier's lot-specific analysis. None of the values above are acceptance limits, and none of them were taken from a Noor Deira Steel offering.

Standards & Tolerance Context

What the specification must pin down, and to what source

A decision-grade table: the parameter, what the buyer must state, the unit and basis it is stated on, how it is verified, and what happens in the RFQ. No value is invented — every entry in the buyer-requirement column is defined by the buyer's own process.

Evidence warning: no tolerance value, acceptance limit or default has been supplied in the table above. The buyer-requirement column states what must be defined, not what the value should be. Any figure used in a live enquiry must come from the buyer's governing document or a supplier's lot-specific analysis.

Verification & Misuse Controls

Where specifications go wrong — and what must be verified

The common failures are not exotic: a grade label treated as a specification, a wet ton compared against a dry ton, or a certificate accepted without the sampling basis behind it. Each has a control.

Industrial handling context illustrating the procurement route for Iron Ore Specifications Guide

Verification turns a stated grade and document set into an inspectable, quotation-ready consignment — not a decorative number.

Grade label without a basis

A bare “62% Fe” states nothing about the basis or method. Treat it as unverified chemistry until both are named.

Mixed mass bases

Comparing offers on different moisture bases measures the moisture convention, not the material. Convert to one basis first.

Cross-form comparison

Fines, lump, pellets and concentrate are separate products. Ranking one against another answers a question nobody asked.

When engineering review is required

Where a limit comes from plant metallurgy rather than a generic grade — the buyer's process engineer sets it, not the supplier.

Product Decision Handoff

Fit, verify-first, or not fit

The specification decides which related product form, material, grade and process route applies. These are not interchangeable — each carries its own acceptance criteria and its own trade-off.

Fit

The specification names a product form, states each controlled element with its test basis, fixes moisture and sizing with their methods, names the sampling standard and lot, and carries the delivery basis. A supplier can answer it without guessing.

Verify first

One or more figures exist without the basis that makes them testable — a grade label with no method, a moisture reading with no mass basis, a size range with no sieve series. The specification is close, but a supplier answering it would be filling gaps you cannot see.

Not fit

The requirement contradicts the product form selected, or the process route and the chemistry window disagree — a fine feed specified against a process that cannot accept it. Change the form or the route before seeking a quotation.

Product form, material & grade paths

Each path states its applicability boundary and the trade-off a buyer accepts by choosing it.

Process, sector and export paths

A specification is only valid inside the process that will consume it. Test the intended duty before treating two ore offers as interchangeable.

Expert Insight

Why the sampling standard changes the decision

A source-backed procurement note: the published scope of the standard, what it does and does not settle, and the consequence for the RFQ.

Decision question

What evidence most directly changes the procurement decision for Iron Ore Specifications Guide on this page?

The sampling basis behind the numbers. A chemistry, moisture or size result describes the sample that was drawn and prepared — so unless the lot was sampled and prepared representatively, the figure cannot be treated as describing the consignment you are buying. This is the single piece of evidence that most often separates a specification that holds up from one that collapses on arrival.

Method, scope & limitations

  • Method: use the published ISO scope to require representative lot sampling and sample preparation before chemistry, moisture, size distribution or physical/metallurgical results are treated as decision-grade.
  • Scope: mechanical and manual sampling and sample preparation for natural and processed iron ores, including concentrates and agglomerates, for lot-level determination of chemical, moisture, size and other properties.
  • Limitation: ISO 3082 defines sampling and preparation principles; it does not set commercial acceptance limits for a specific contract.
  • Limitation: the 2017 edition remains the published edition but is under revision, so procurement teams should verify the edition named in the contract.

Buyer implication: a certificate value is only as useful as the sampling basis behind it. The RFQ should state the lot, the sampling method, the test method and the acceptance basis — not simply ask for an Fe number.

Evidence-led Buyer Advantages

Buyer concerns mapped to evidence, not claims

Each concern maps to something verifiable and then to a practical procurement outcome. No superiority claim is made or implied.

“The Fe figure we are quoted may not mean what we think.”

Evidence: The grading basis and test method are stated with the figure, and the sampling standard is named.

Outcome: You compare two offers on the same basis, so a difference in the number reflects the material rather than the reporting convention.

“We do not know whether we are buying wet tonnes or dry tonnes.”

Evidence: The mass basis is declared alongside the moisture figure, and both appear in the offer.

Outcome: The quantity being priced is unambiguous, which removes the most common source of a disputed delivery.

“Different suppliers send different documents and we cannot compare them.”

Evidence: The required document set is named in the specification rather than assumed.

Outcome: Every supplier answers the same document request, so the offers arrive in a comparable shape.

“A grade label alone does not tell us if it suits our process.”

Evidence: The application or process route is stated as part of the specification.

Outcome: Suitability is tested against the intended duty instead of against a trade name.

“Two quotes differ and we cannot tell whether it is the material or the logistics.”

Evidence: Destination with a named place or port, and the Incoterm, are fixed before quoting.

Outcome: Cost differences can be attributed to the right cause, so the comparison stays meaningful.

Buyer FAQ

Questions that come after the specification exists

Procurement and quality questions, not definitions — the basics are resolved above.

What specification fields should a buyer provide for Iron Ore Specifications Guide?
Product form, Fe target or the grading basis it is stated on, buyer-defined limits for SiO2, Al2O3, P, S and any other controlled element, the moisture basis, the size distribution with its sizing basis, the applicable sampling and test methods, the application or process route, quantity, destination and named place or port, Incoterm, required documents and the delivery or quotation timing.
How should Fe grade and impurity limits be verified?
Against a test method, not against a label. A stated Fe figure is only decision-grade when it names the standard and edition used to determine it and the sampling basis behind the sample. Where an offer gives a grade label without a method, treat the chemistry as unverified and ask for the analysis basis before comparing it with another offer.
Why should moisture and size distribution be stated with a test basis?
Because both change the quantity or the process fit without changing the material. Moisture determines whether a quoted tonne is wet or dry, so offers on different bases are not comparable until converted. Size distribution determines which process the ore can feed, and a sizing result is only meaningful alongside the method used to obtain it. Stating both without a basis leaves the comparison unresolved.
Which quality and inspection documents should be requested rather than assumed?
Request only what the specification actually requires, and name it: the certificate of analysis and the sampling standard it was established under, the moisture determination, the size distribution record, any applicable physical or metallurgical test results, and the origin and shipping documents the destination requires. Certificates are not interchangeable between lots or between sampling bases, so do not assume a standard document set covers a non-standard requirement.
Which commercial and delivery inputs are needed for a comparable RFQ?
Quantity and the cadence it is required over, origin if a specific origin is required, destination with a named place or port, the Incoterm, the currency, the required document set and the date the quotation must remain valid to. Without the delivery basis stated precisely, two quotes can differ in cost purely because different logistics responsibilities sit on each side.

Method & Basis

The completeness rule, stated plainly

The check applied above is deterministic and can be reproduced by hand. It contains no weighting and no scoring.

Core-field rule

A specification is incomplete while any core field is absent. Core fields are: product form, Fe target, moisture, size distribution, sampling method, application route, quantity, and destination. No default is substituted for an absent field.

Basis rule

When every core field is present, the specification is verify-first if a stated figure lacks its basis: Fe without a grading basis or test method, moisture without a mass basis, or size without a sizing method.

Complete rule

Only when every core field is present and every stated figure carries its basis does the checker report complete. Completeness describes the document, never the material, its availability or its suitability.

What this method deliberately does not do

  • It does not supply, guess or default any acceptance limit.
  • It does not rank suppliers or score material quality.
  • It does not confirm availability, compliance or suitability.
  • It does not treat a grade label as a completed specification.

Worked Examples

Two reports, side by side

What the checker returns for a thin specification and for a complete one — using illustrative example data only.

Example A — thin specification

Product form: fines
Fe target: 62%
Quantity: 25,000 t
Destination: Jeddah

Result: verify-first. Four core fields are missing (moisture, size distribution, sampling method, application route), and the Fe figure has no grading basis or test method. The checker leaves all of them blank rather than filling them.

Decision impact: a supplier answering this would each assume their own chemistry limits. The offers would not be comparable.

Example B — complete specification

Product form: fines
Fe 62% natural basis, ISO 2597
SiO2 max 6.0% · Al2O3 max 2.5%
Moisture 8.5% DMT
Size 10–30 mm, ISO 4701
Sampled per ISO 3082, lot = shipment
Route: sinter plant
25,000 t · CFR Jeddah · valid 30 days

Result: complete. Every core field is present and each stated figure carries its basis, so the specification can be issued and every supplier answers the same question.

Verification step: the limits above would still need to come from the buyer's own plant requirements — the checker confirms they are stated, not that they are correct.

Every value in both examples is illustrative example data. Nothing here is a Noor Deira Steel figure, a market benchmark or a live quotation.
